i5 or i7

Go to solution Solved by BoomLiam,

I do YouTube and Livestreaming just fine with an i5. If you have the money, sure, go with the i7. But if you'd rather save the money for something else, then you won't be disappointed with an i5

Hey guys, i currently have an i3, gtx 550ti, 8g, some decent gigabyte mobo, 500W power supply.

Im looking to upgrade my cpu, i make youtube video's i stream sometimes and i play ALLOT of games.

My current setup works "ok" but i want faster, im not worried about my gfx card just cpu and i was wondering what would be the best for me i7 or i5 i know ones faster than the other but i want to know if i would be able to get away with i5 because i don't have allot of money.

Also this was my first pc build so i don't know but if i change the cpu would it just boot up normally after wards? Thank you :)

Of course the i7 is better, but only if you have the money. What motherboard do you have?

[AMD Athlon 64 Mobile 4000+ Socket 754 | Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro nForce3 | OCZ 2GB DDR PC3200 | Sapphire HD 3850 512MB AGP | 850 Evo | Seasonic 430W | Win XP/10]

The i7 is a waste of money for you. I'd get the i5.

Streaming should be fine if you have good upload speed. If you feel you need to upgrade and you have good internet, go for the i5. It should be plenty as is.

Will you be switching out the motherboard also? If you are (maybe for better vrm) you might as well go for an AMD 8350 if you aren't getting an i7.

People bought i7's thinking multicore applications would take full benefit...

Some do, some don't.

I was one of those people.

I do video encoding, but not anything heavyweight.... whether in i7 or i5 mode (HT off) it performs the same in gaming (give or take 1-2fps), the same in general usage of windows...

Sticking with an i5, will not disappoint you, an i7 is overkill if not doing pretty impressive works like UBER-Rendering (youtube video's are not UBER & do not need an i7 to be made)

If your into 3d modelling, maybe, I'd still go with Xtreme 6core CPU's over i7's.

But for your uses...

Gaming + Streaming + Encoding non-professional video's, the i5 will do you plenty.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I5 is powerful enough, I would suggest upgrading your Graphics card as well. The new 700 series from Nvidia have a program called Shadowplay that will record you gameplay and even stream it to twitch with only a 5% performance hit. It will be released in a few weeks so we can see if it lives up to the hype.

Well any Kepler based GPU will run shadowplay.
