I was wondering if its possible to stream my desktops gaming experience to a small pc.

Such as a NUC

I'll be spending some time away from home so portability is key. This option is considerably cheaper than building an mITX system.

I understand lag will be an issue but will it be a killer?

TL;DR- is there anyway to have an Nvidia Grid-like experience for gaming on the go?

Remember that you will need to buy DDR3 SODIMMS, an OS and an mSATA SSD.

I have done some local tests with an Apple TV, AirParrot and my gaming rig on my 50/25 wireless internet, and the lag was minimal. It may be worse jumping from one network to another though.

Main Rig: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) KLEVV CRAS XR RGB DDR4-3600 | Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX | Storage: 500GB Crucial P3 Plus, 4TB Silicon Power UD90 | GPU: AsRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Steel Legend | Cooling: ThermalTake Floe 280mm w/ be quiet! Pure Wings 3 | Case: Sliger SM580 (Black) | PSU: Corsair SF850

Main Server: CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X | RAM: 64GB (2x32GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3200 | Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair VII Hero WiFi | Storage: 512GB SKHynix NVMe | GPUs: NVIDIA TITAN Xp 2-way SLI | Cooling: Thermalright Frozen Prism 360mm | Case: Corsair 5000D Airflow (White) | PSU: Seasonic Focus GM850

Im pretty sure I can "find" an OS

So it will probably cost around $550ish.

Im hoping that the experience will still triumph a low budget mITX build

What exactly do you mean by streaming the gaming experience from your Desktop to the NUC?

I run an i3 IB NUC 24/7 then only fire up the watercooled rig when I want to play games. However I am exceptionally interested in the SteamBox streaming possibility to a HTPC I have...

Well, once Steam In-Home Streaming becomes available, I'd assume that your idea would work just fine. Right now I don't think there is really a way for lag-less game streaming aside from the Shield.

 Motherboard: MSI Z97S Krait Edition █ CPU: Intel i7-4790K █ GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 780Ti █ RAM: 8GB AVEXIR DDR3 1600  █ Storage: 120GB Kingston HyperX SSD + 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD

█ Monitor: 21.5" 1080p 60Hz  PSU: 700w █ Case: Fractal Define R4 █       ...LTT Dark Theme master race.

Cross your fingers it works with SteamOS streaming... That would be great!

SteamOS would be the ideal operation of this system. I didnt know if the NUC would be powerful enough to stream on. I guess I'll hold out for diy steam boxes to arrive and look at pricing

Righto, the new i5 Haswell NUC with 5000 Intel graphics should be able to handle streaming just fine. I cant see how it would be worse than Shield...

I was under the impression that the power of the device being streamed to was almost irrelevant. It just has to be powerful enough to decode a 1080p H264 stream. Meaning even a NUC without the latest intel HD5000 igpu would be absolutely fine.

Heck, I'm hoping the D525 dual core atom and AMD5340m gpu'd arctic mc001 passive mini pc's I got for €99 in an amazon sale, will be able to stream from the gaming PC. I got 6 of them to use as XBMC media streamers for around the house and they play 1080p BluRay rips no problem.

Remember, the nvidiia shield streaming capability is streaming from your uber PC to what is in effect an android cellphone inside a joypad.

Basically, if the device can run Linux and can play 1080p content smoothly, then it's good enough....AFAIK.

That's dealing with the hardware aspect of the OP's post.

However, most of you seem to have understood his post to be talking about streaming from one device in the home to another device in the home. I read the OP as meaning streaming from his home PC to a small device he takes with him to his college dorms or something and game streaming over the Internet.

That's a different kettle of fish. Did onLive ever achieve lag free cloud game streaming over the Internet??

The shield own display is 720p.. Turn on console mode and hook up your 1080p TV with HDMI, and your PC to shield with Ethernet for that 1080p streaming from PC - shield - TV.

GamingPC: Intel 4770k CPU, 2xMSI 780 GTX Twin Frozr, 16 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro, Swiftech H220 CPU Cooler.
