My CPU usage fluctuates a lot when using Adobe Media Encoder to render an After Effects project, which is an audio visualizer. I'm using the match source-high bitrate preset. The CPU usage goes up to 80% then 1 second later it comes back down to 40%-50% and then again goes back up to 80%-90%. This makes my rendering times massive.

EDIT: Just tried to encode an avi file and the CPU usage is constant, so that means this fluctuation only occurs with After Effects project files.

I'm running Adobe After Effects CC 2015 13.7 on Windows 10

My PC Specs:

Lenovo x240 configured with:

  • Intel Core i3-4010U
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • 500 GB HDD

I noticed today my Adobe Premiere was doing the same.

But my GPU usage was going UP when my CPU usage was going DOWN.

So it's obviously a balancing act on each parts strengths... Effects are likely GPU driven and your CPU usage goes down for that period.

I could be wrong, but it seems plausible.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I don't have a GPU, only an integrated GPU with the processor.

Thats still classified as a GPU.

But.. Adobe AE can use GPU's of multiple types to enhance render times, but it isn't always enabled...

It certainly is a weird issue if your using CPU only, you can monitor your GPU usages with GPU-Z while your rendering to see if it rises in load (outside of typical) when your CPU load goes down.

It wont if AE is using CPU only mode. - Something I still don't know if your using or not.

Im currently reading into it
