G910 Orion Spectrum similar to G510?

Grishnaackh

Hi!

Earlier this day I bought the G910 Orion Spectrum (not the one with the weird key caps) that was about 46% off. As of now I have a G510 (a membrane keyboard) and I'm wondering if anyone knows if the overall feeling between these two is similar. As I've understood it, Logitech has received a lot of critisism for the G910 being strange to use. I however like the feeling of the G510 but I'm wondering if I should return it and buy Corsair's K70 Cherry MX Brown instead. What do you guys think?

I've tried to read some about the differences between these two. Even though some people seem to prefer the Romer-G switches it feels like a vast majority of the "experts" would prefer K70 Lux.

Personally, I like Cherry MX Blues for the click and force needed. Romer-G switches, I would say, are a good combo of the Blue "click" and the Red force and speed.

Also, did you get it from Best Buy? If you did, we bought the same one.

So you think I should keep it, rather than go for the K70?

No, actually. I'm Swedish, so naturally I bought it from a Swedish site.

I don't think so. The law here is that you may return it for 45 days, as long as the box is unopened. It also says, however, that the costumer may "inspect" the product but I don't want to take any unnecessary risks. I did pay ~$130 after all.

It'd be up to you. Personally, I prefer the Logitech over Corsair due to the software and product. The G910 Orion Spark (the original) was a good keyboard, but I went back to the G710 b/c of the wrist-rest hurting my, well, wrist. The Orion Spectrum fixes most of those tiny details, though, making it a good keyboard on paper. I'll be receiving it tomorrow (hopefully) or Saturday (most likely) and can post back if you'd like.

So far I've used it for about 30 hours and I'm very pleased with the "click" and tactility of the switches.

I'm still trying to get used to the macro keys since there are now 5 on the side and 4 above the F1-F4 keys. This is a double-edged sword as I had six on the side that worked extremely well, but I'm getting used to it and finding it quite handy for "combat" and "non-combat" scenarios without having to separate them into different macro sets. The side macros are spaced very well. Close together in a column but close to WASD for quick use in-game or productivity software.

For reference, I have the top four macros to:

Open Chrome #1

Open Firefox #2

Open AviMark #3

Open Steam #4

The side macros are set as a per-program basis using the M1/M2/M3 sets, mostly with Cut, Copy, Paste, etc. on M1, Excel specific shortcuts on M2, and Displayfusion shortcuts on M3. These sets can be set in any way you'd like. Logitech Gaming Software will be needed to apply these macros. LGS picked up the G910 immediately (as it should have) and came with all the expected options for RGB key backlighting including individual, zone, command for games, and effects (for key press, breathing, star effect, wave from center, wave from outside, and color cycle) giving an overwhelming degree of freedom. With this keyboard, you also have the option of setting what keys become locked when enabling the Game Key.

My usual typing speed is about 90WPM but at the moment I'm going at 70WPM, but I'm sure that it'll pick back up once I'm used to the keyboard itself. As for the "click", it's not as loud as the Cherry MX Blues, but that may not be a bad thing as they won't annoy anyone in the house. The keys are, as stated, between a Cherry MX Blue and Red. This may or may not deter you, but they are very smooth in their actuation. As an aside, I think I'm regaining my hearing since the "click" isn't as loud.

Playing Rocket League, Dark Souls 2, and Alien: Isolation left me feeling a bit tense as the keys weren't immediately familiar on the first day. The second day, today, was much better as I've become accustomed to the switches. I'm able to pull off every move in the same amount of time with the Romer-G's as I was able with the Cherry MX Blues from the G710. Using the macros are much quicker as they're not spread apart in pairs and they are much closer to WASD. Some games will be much easier to play once the macros are set in a worthwhile manner and, once again, you can set three sets for each game.

Using the keyboard on the LTT website is a blast if that matters.

That's my two-day review of the G910 Orion Spectrum. Let me know if you have any questions that I can answer.

Okay, thank you very much for taking the time to review it. I don't have any further questions right now but it seems like I will be rather pleased with my purchase . I will definitely keep it.

I don't use the macros much on my G510 but after reading that you use them for Firefox, Steam etc. I figure that those can come in handy.

The romer-g switches are often compared to the feel of membrane boards but they come with the benefits of a mechanical switch. Like a membrane they tend to hold at the top before "collapsing" when you apply enough force to actuate the switch (think about how your membrane keys don't move smoothly and tend to go straight to the bottom when you press them, unlike a cherry which has a smooth linear motion from top to bottom excepting any tactility of browns or blues). They provide a subtle tactile bump similar to what you get from cherry browns, though it is really subtle and kinda hidden by the collapsing feeling of the switch. Unlike a membrane keyboard you do not have to bottom out the key to send a keypress which saves a lot of potential discomfort from the impact forces from bottoming out.

TL;DR: They feel more similar to a membrane switch than say, a cherry switch, but come with the benefits of a mechanical switch. The are going to feel different to your membrane keyboard but in my opinion it is a good kind of different.

Romer-G's are comparable to Browns tbh

And I have the Orion Spark ( the one w/ the weird keycaps)

I love them, don't even notice them at all :)

Edit: really wish y'all would give these poor keycaps a chance smh

Shipping sucks

I'm probably going to post a month's long review of the G910 Orion Spectrum. Hopefully, like @GSTARR said, more people become interested in Romer-G keys. They're slightly less annoying than MX Blues with the speed of Reds.
