with mobiles now being able to achieve 256gb of memory in sd card form i want to know what the advantages and disadvantages of both.

what i am thinking of is needing something for traveling. while crushing weights at the gym my current new nano is great.

the one that sticks out to me most is the physical size with 80gb+ of classic in older generations would be thicker and heavier in my prognosis then a mobile.  while the smaller 16gb nanos are super thin and light and can hold upwards of 4000 songs it may not be enough for traveling the world when what i really want is whole albums or greatest hits from Elvis to current.

Depends on where you're using it. Personally, I have 23GB of music so my Note 4 and iPhone SE have plenty of space left over. If you're looking for something at the gym, the Nano would be best as you can set a playlist tailored to your needs, but for travel something larger is better IF you'll use it.

Also, you can use iTunesFusion to sync an Android with your Apple devices.

i like the idea of using a 2nd mobile just for tunes, video, calender, alarm and wifi for traveling the world. i get more features then an ipod. thankfully i did not waste money on a ipod classic just because i wanted 80gb of tunes. anyone of my spare phones can use the sd card memory slot from 64gb and up. i did however buy a 16gb touch just because it was so fucking cheap, if i like it i will sell my new one for big cash and use my fucking cheap ipod. i need to find some ultra small big memory big ram big cpu speed mobiles.

will there be delay issues strictly for mp3's on ipod versus mobile and what sd card class should i buy for the mobile?

Have you considered getting something other than an iPod? There are quite a few companies that make higher end portable music players, and they can hold way, way more music than the iPod can and some have significantly better audio.

Carrying a second phone is an option I suppose, though they generally have quite poor DAC/AMPs and chew threw battery quite quickly.

what are some other options?

the ipod touch is as big as a mobile phone and the ipod touch only holds 5000 songs and i doubt the touch would be good for watching movies, which is where an ipad or similar device would come in handy.

ipod touch - sure i can use the calender and its alerts, could be a great secondary notification device. i doubt i'd use google maps or its route finder much, weather app is the same. notes has a good chance of being used. youtube app doesnt work because touch is old. apps cant be downloaded either. i will see if i can sell it for cheap and make $5 off it.

There's loads, it largely depends on your budget. I can easily make suggestions from $50 all the way up into the thousands.

I made a spreadsheet of the ones I was pondering a while ago, and found the best bang for the buck, surprisingly, is Sony. They have a 64GB model that can take 256GB microSD cards. Super long 50 hour battery life. AptX bluetooth. I think that model would be $299US. They're quite small as well.

If you're looking for video as well, then yeah a tablet makes more sense. I'd go with something like an Asus Zenpad 8.0 S.

Cheap, expandable, and actually quite excellent for the price. I got mine brand new for $80.

As for those other uses, I assumed you'd still be carrying your phone, thus they aren't really necessary.
