Running Cat6 through my house

Akolyte

So, this might seems like quite an idiot thing to ask about, but I've never done it before and am quite intimidated by the thought of running cat6 cables through my house.

The house isn't in development, it's already build, it's only 1 story and has an attic, everywhere I want to run the cables already has other sockets for power and TV etc.  So I guess it will make it easier running a cable down a path that has been traveled before.  I might be able to take pictures of the house and sockets for you guys if you think you can help me.  I really want to know whether it's possible for a noob like myself to do a job like this, and what kind of equipment I would need.

I want to have a socket with about 4 RJ45 jacks which runs 4 cables through the attic into 2 other rooms and goes down into a socket with an RJ-45 jack.  So I know I will need cat6 cabling, and probably a crimp tool, I know I'll need a plate and some ethernet jacks.  But I'm not sure if I'll need anything else, and the biggest fear I have is that I will run a cable through the wall and it will end up getting stuck and I will loose it.

Hope someone can help me!  Thanks guys!

Drop the lines where the existing plates are. Once there, cut another plate using an appropriate knife and set a new plate for the Cat6. I would recommend putting more lines than you think you'll need for insurance, i.e. a bedroom needs one line so add a 2-port plate and living room needs two or three, go for a 4-port plate.

from looking into this to rewire my own house, cat6 is a waste of money.

either get high quality cat5e (as in, the ones that dont wear out fast)

or bite the bullet and go cat6A for future 10Gb compatibility.

and depending on how your house is built, this can be either an easy afternoon job, or a nightmare.

EDIT: insomnia brain is a bit slow, if you want a really good quality cable, get an S/FTP cable, they're near indestructible, i do recommend decent tools for those, because i've bent several crimp tools over mine xD

Actually for wall sockets you will need a punch down tool, not a crimp.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punch_down_tool

The actual running of the cable is the harder part, be careful not to electrocute yourself, some Countries/States it's illegal to do data cabling without a licence.

The actual mounting of plates/punch down is the easier part.

you need to cut holes in the dry wall and run the cable up into the attic or through vents. there is a new product out that i saw last night on this old house where it ads a ceiling molding and you can drop the line down from there

you can buy the punch down tool off ebay for $2 for the cheap plastic one, or $5 for the cheap 'better' one

in the usa and canada you are allowed to do anything to your house as long as you get permits

some mounting plates just have an rj45 jack on the inside as well, depends on what OP is buying.

And he needs the crimps for the actual switch or modem.

or he can get mounting plates with rj45 on the inside so he can make do with just crimps ;)

or could always just do the cable coming out the wall thing and save some money on stupidly overpriced mounting plates :D

i believe you can also buy flat cat cable but i may be mistaken but if you can just run it under the carpet

if you cant then run it under the carpet but closest or under the floor molding

Very informative everyone!!!  Thank you very much :)

I will get these tools, make a detailed plan and hopefully start work within the next few days (depending on when the cable arrives).  I will probably have more questions so I might need some help again!

I will document the process of wiring my house, will be a VERY new and (hopefully) exiting new experience!

Hopefully the wife doesn't attack you. And if she does, make a guide on how to quiet them down (not that it helps).

It only works for a few minutes though. They have the attention span of a toddler sometimes. They have a fine eye for details and relaxation.
