How to get started

jasonwj322a

So I've always liked technology and so I recently decided to get serious about it. I know coding/programming is very complicated and I know pretty much nothing about them. I've done the ones where you drag and drop blocks but I know real coding is nothing like that. Right now I'm stuck on where to start. I know there's websites but which one? I really want something for beginners like me but would grow more advance. Im currently in high school, so something free would be nice.

Linda.com is great. If you have a community college near by, maybe consider taking classes there. Linda is cheaper, but a professor could help you with issues right away, with Linda you would need to ask online for help. :)

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special-_-

Does your high school offer coding classes?

That sucks! Well, I think linda.com is you best choice then, and you can ask here if something isn't working correctly. :D Your response might not be immediate but most posts here get a response!

Remember to find a way that is entertaining. If you're in to games try making small text based games. If you into automating tasks, try doing to website scraping to find the number of times a word shows on a page. Basically anything.

It's just important that you remember to have fun, and suck in everything you learn.

So what are you in to in regards for coding? making websites? front end, back end? windows applications? console applications? cross platform? mobile? the answer varies widely depending on what you answer to the above.

Actually "real" coding is exactly like that except you write the answer to the problem rather than drag a block.

Depending on your age and resources (e.g. transportation) that shouldn't stop you - I took many math and science classes at my "local" (20 minutes away) community college while I was in High School to get ahead of the game. They're generally pretty cheap (compared to private school) and will be your best shot, in my opinion. Especially for those who may not know exactly where to start, having a structured class with defined goals and assignments will be the perfect launching point.

I happened to be one of the lucky ones who had a programming option at my High School. Just to date myself a bit, I learned on Q BASIC. Oh the nostalgia.

You always able to learn using book and self-training without courses, my first programming language is VB6 long before .NET even existed.

Try to learn the basics like variables, looping, and such with languages such as BASIC or C, while some may suggest you to get into HTML programming as a beginner course that I suggest you learn the conventional language that I mentioned above so you could get taste of much more advance course like in OOP(Object Oriented Programming) like PHP or Java.

And I had a tips for you that don't rush when try to learn programming language, I started long before high school as a hobby and a few years later I became obsessed by it. There is a chance that it get so tedious that you want to quit early.

Most of all, Good Luck.
