Asus X99 Deluxe 3.1 USB - random USB drop out

Hi,

I've recently bought a HTC vive and although I'm not currently using it - I'm having difficulty with my USB 3 / USB 2.0 connections.

Asus X99 Deluxe USB 3.1 with Haswell-E 5830k

The mother board Bios is 3402 (updated) and I've got xHCI Smart Auto / Enabled and legacy ECHI support enabled but hand off and so on disabled.

I've updated the bios and all the USB drivers I can find sequentially to latest versions - but when the computer is under load I'm getting random USB drop outs (i.e. my external powered USB 2 hub and presume other component (like external USB 2 DVD drive) is dropping out then being found again.

I did all the above which got rid of the nonsense 'not enough usb controller resources' messages - but now I'm getting random dropouts to otherwise working hardware.

Anyone with any advice?

I can provide more information tomorrow if needed. Like system information and the like.

All my USB are rear.

I've got a Belkin USB 2 hub connected to the rear. Plus a LG external DVD drive rear USB connectors. Both are USB2.0

I've also got two NZXT internal USB 2.0 expansions https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0031ESKJA fitted internally, controlling my case lighting and fan cooling controllers.

I have two Corsair mini commanders controlling my H110i and case fans.

Attached to one of these NZXT USB 2 header extensions.

From my Mobo:

I have one USB3 header connected to front panel.

Two USB 2 headers connected to to the two NZXT then the front USB 2 to one of these internal hubs. Trying not to overload any one USB headers.

I was having error messages (which was notorious to the board) but these have gone post bios update and so on. Now I just have annoying disconnections on load. Occasional at idle.

kk, was just wondering. I've had some power/interrupt drops on my front panel USB from my x99 sabertooth from high load devices, but no issues on the rear.

Even though they don't need to be, have you tried connecting to the USB3.0 ports instead?

I have a similar load of usb internal devices.

Its annoying isn't it though?

Since Windows 10 initiated the xHCI over EHCI and so on things have been a complete mess with Asus boards.

I think all my rear ports are USB3 on the Mobo IO.

Only the front panel are technically USB2 as they are connected direct to a USB 2 header (or an internal extention from NZXT).

The issue I think is this xHCI single controller that covers USB3 and USB2 and an inability to specify individual ports or designate controllers...

Basically its making USB a minefield on these types of boards.

Any help or suggestions appreciated as at the moment I'm at a loss.

Hmm... So the USB3.1 gen two ports have to be a different controller, you can try those (EDIT: OMG WTF ASUS 10 USB 3.0 ports in the rear. You'd have to use the included add in card's usb ports for those.)

I haven't had ANY issues with my back ports, but maybe I'm lucky. My top 4 ports are USB2.0 though.

I personally think Asus just did a shitty ass job with this gen of motherboards given all the other issues people have seen with them.

SO A LOT OF TESTING LATER!

Including driver updates and removals and the like.

This is not a driver issue. I unplugged the USB 2.0 external powered hub that was attached to the USB 3.0 rear.

Immediately stability improved across all my USB devices and I've had no random disconnects.

The hub belkin 2-in-1 F5U706/UK as attached.

https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-USB-2-0-7-PORT-HUB/dp/B000TTTJ36

It appears that the drivers are not fully Windows 10 compatible.

Any thoughts on either getting new drivers for it that are compatible (I've searched can't find any) or recommended purchases?

For GUARANTEED WINDOWS 10 compatible USB 3.0 external desktop USB hub?

One that will not go legacy within a few months!

One that is recommended by people as they have it themselves.

Have purchased this one on order. Will see how I get on as I need a powered external USB hub - on the desk right in front of me. It needs to be powered to try and avoid some of these issues I've been having and plus it avoids overloading any one port.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00RXKBX74

Arrives tomorrow. So fingers crossed.
