System Longevity re i-5 6500 or i-5 6600k

Hi Everyone,

Should I choose the i-5 6500 or i-5 6600k?

Modest mATX gaming build. Was going to buy the 6500 on a h170 board, but then found a 6600k for $10 more.

How much more longevity will I get out of the 6600k? I will be using a 1060, so I do not think that the 6600k will really affect my gaming performance in the near future. However, will an investment in the higher base clock and overclocking of the 6600k make my system more relevant in several years such that I would only have to buy a new GPU?

Here are the two builds I have in mind:

i-5 6600k--http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Tricky_Purple/saved/Bdqpgs

Thank you

it would make your cpu more future proof but you can only overclock on a z170 chipset i believe. h170 wont work for that. the i5 6600k will have a higher second hand value though.

Look at the links, he put z170 with the 6600K

almost no difference if you are not getting a z170 board to overclock. more longevity comes from unlocked chips as the higher frequency allows them not to bottleneck gpus. either way if its only 10 bucks more go for the 6600k. check this z170 board its quite inexpensive. https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-LGA1151-Intel-Motherboards-GA-Z170M-D3H/dp/B012N6F0TO

my bad. for the build i would recommend going for the new 960 evo. the speeds are much better and the cache does not fill up very fast and after sustained reads it drops to 20mbps quite frequently on the 600p. also going with an evga bronze unit would be not that bad of an idea.

The 6600k option is pretty cheap! I'd go for it.

However I wouldn't consider the 3GB 1060 as my GPU, it's a cut down version of the 6GB 1060 (it's not just the vram that changes). Just pony up a bit more and get the full fat 1060. It'd be a shame if you get this GPU and next year you realize the game you want to play needs  bit more than 3GB.

The 6600k is better and it's nicely priced. Altough if you aren't going for a Z MOBO it wouldn't be very optimal, simply because you have to take in consideration an aftermarket cooler(unlocked CPUs don't come with one), which can add $30 easily.
