survellience is optimised for 24/7 writing.

desktop is all rounder, lower warranty than enterprise, and various speeds dependant on price.

enterprise has raid support, longer warranty, and usually high rpm.

NAS has raid and can be between 5400-7200 rpm.

So I see many Mechanical Hard Drives and I would like to know the differences of them?

AV / Surveillance Drive

Desktop Hard Drive

Enterprise Drive

NAS Drive

Each type of drive is supposedly rated for a different purpose in terms of longevity and use case. I say supposedly because they haven't been around long enough to actually have been tested for their use cases, similarly to how CD's and DVD's are supposed to last over 100 years. But I digress...

Desktop drives (WD Blues / Greens) are for general purpose home use cases - they're the most common and usually lower priced.

NAS & Surveillance drives (WD Red / Purple, respectively) are meant for 24/7 operation, with the latter constantly being written to during operation.

Enterprise drives (SAS / SCSI / 10K & 15K RPM drives) are usually rated for the same as NAS & Surveillance drives, but also have a much better warranty.

You can check out the article below for a good overview of all the different types of WD drives. (The info applies to other brands too.)
