So I'm using a TP link WDR3500 as an access point wired into a cisco DPC3941T from xfinity, and the network works fine but the ethernet ports on the main router went from about 100mb/s to 5mb/s. What might be causing this? Thanks for any suggestions

cables ok?

Has the links been downgraded to a lower band; does it have status lights for 10/100/1000?

The cables are fine, the interesting thing is that if i plug into the access point then i get 100 down again, but thats impractical for this setup, I've tried switching the ports around but that didn't make a difference. I don't think it has status lights for 10/100/1000

too many things it could be if the cables are stressed physically in some way that would be easy.

These are both wireless APs is that right?

Which one is the main router with the problem TP or Cisco?

How are you measuring the speed?

What does your computer's network status indicate in terms of 10/100/1000 link speed

The main router is the cisco, I'm just using speedtest but the issues show up in streaming and downloading also.

I dont know where to check the status, I've dug around in the router homepage but i can't find any info on it. It looks like i can try running a script to measure it though so I'm going to try that and see what it comes up with.

you should be able to see the link status on your desktop computer connected on ethernet if it is connecting on 10 or 100 or 1000 speed

i see. thats interesting because it is linking as a gigabit connection. thats a real head scratcha. I assume you power cycled everything. Is someone torrenting on your network?

Nope,  i wish there were a custom firmware for the main router so i could see if there was anything leeching on the network, but mostly just phones and tablets on the network.

You can plug in a linux laptop to you network and see whats going on but thats a bit much for now. I dont want to ask you to draw a diagram of your network and publish it on a public forum; that would be very bad.

So help me understand on one router everything is ok but when you connect the other router to your network, internet slows down everywhere or just on that one problematic router?

Thanks a lot for taking the time to help me with this, i really appreciate it.

The internet slows down just for the ethernet ports on the main router. the wifi works fine and the ethernet ports on the second router work fine.

Edit: and yeah without the new router plugged in, the main router ethernet works fine.

ok so what happens when you connect two computers to the dodgy ethernet ports? check the link speed and transfer some files
