So I was planning to get a used 980 Classified edition. It comes with 4GB of VRAM. I have seen benchmarks of games (GTA V, Witcher III) at 1080p that use close to 4GB of VRAM. And since I plan to play some pretty heavy games at higher settings with the card, I am wondering, is 4GB of VRAM enough in 2016 at 1080p? How about 1440p? Or should I spend an extra ~$90 and go for a 1060 6GB, which is lower clocked and is a base grade GPU?

Should be enough for 1080p for a while. You might have to turn down some settings on new AAA games like Dishonored 2 which uses a stupid amount of VRAM.

No need to spend extra for 1060. Go 980 should be enough

sounds dank. Is the 1060 more future-proof however?

4GB is enough VRAM for 2016 games at 1080p yes...but for 2017-2018 games at 1440p it will struggle...even performance wise you'd have to tweak the settings a fair bit in future games at 2560x1440 even with a GTX 1060 6GB.

1060 6GB is the new mid-range chip, it's not base grade, 1050 and 1050ti are base grade...GTX 1060 6GB perform like a GTX 980 with more VRAM.

For comfortable 1440p gaming on high/ultra settings i'd recommend a GTX 1070 or a GTX 980ti.

I meant base-grade as in reference. The 980 I was looking at is Classified edition.

90$ cheaper you say? i would go with that one...yes.

For 1920x1080 GTX 980 and GTX 1060 6GB are top notch cards that will last a while.

well yeah if you add tax and shipping to the 1060 it's significant...i would go with the used classi.

hummm...from the benchmarks i've seen it's a little better actually...

They are almost exactly the same so there is some variance in different games.

You can get a Zotac mini 6gb for $315 CAD, which is $235 USD. So you're a pessimist!
