What program are you using? OBS, Xsplit, Ableton Live, FL Studio??

It's mostly the CPU, which is doing all the processing. Audio hardware is for the fancy stuff and those who need it. If you can, lower your buffer size. Try to find a sweet balance between a buffer big enough to not cause underruns (sounds like clipping) and a buffer short enough for acceptable latency.

Cheers!

I don't need it for any specific purpose or program. Just in general for skype, gaming etc. It's just uncomfortable not being able to hear my voice like I could with a headset.

If I plug both the headphones and mic into my motherboard then it works fine by using the onboard sound manager. But then I lose the benefits of having a sound card.

Thanks.

You can set virtual in and outputs and hear yourself.

The latency and performance isn't that great on Virtual ASIO...

OP, are you on headphones or speakers? Might be feedback from the headphones...

"Voicemeeter is an application endowed with Virtual Audio I/O and can be used as main audio device by your system, like it was hardware mixing console. Voicemeeter supports all audio interface: MME, Direct-X, KS, WaveRT, WASAPI, and ASIO to connect audio pro DAW or musical instrument. "

So not only Asio, but all the standards.

He uses headphones, and he WANTS to hear himself.

The whole point of ASIO is that it offers much, MUCH higher performance and lower latency than Windows DirectSound. In my opinion, it's what matters if you want to have your voice on something...

I tried it on a Skype call. It really wasn't that great, but mileage may vary, so I encourage you to try.

I might be setting up wrong but there's still a delay, though it is smaller. I need it to be instant so I'm guessing this is impossible without using a headset right?

It's impossible without using a customized version of Linux where the audio pipeline is specifically built to have lower latency as it's processed.

Windows, and even MacOS, can only process audio as quickly as the API calls within the OS allow.

ASIO helps to get around this by operating on a lower stack level, but still has driver overhead that has to be processed by the OS at some point.

That said, Voicemeeter Banana is what I use for playing music over Skype with friends recording business meetings where I need to hear myself too.
