Canon has the Canon PIXMA MG2520 Inkjet All-in-One Printer which sells for $30 at Walmart. It is an all in one, and comes with ink. The ink refills at Walmart are more than the printer itself, so you can either:

Option 1) Buy a whole new $30 printer with ink included every time you run out, and sell the old printer to some idiot who doesn't research ink prices. If you can get $10 for the old printer each time, then you'd have yourself a pretty good scheme.

Option 2) Buy refills online. These won't be too much cheaper, if you really want cheap refills then you have to spend more than $50 on the printer itself.

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special-_-

The Brother HL-2270DW has pretty cheap refills, and since it's laser you would not need to worry about clogs like you do with an inkjet.

Cheap refills will work with $300 to $700 printers :P

Your other option is the $40 to $150 printers with ink refills that cost roughly $25 for black or $50 black + color. (color on it's own would be $30)

I think, honestly, a good option if buying that $30 Canon at Walmart, then throwing it away and buying a whole new printer each time you run out of ink. It's $30 for a brand new machine plus ink, or $50 for just ink... which would you choose?

I'm not trolling, that's a valid way to save money on ink. Printers and ink are both very expensive. If you just want good printers, how about a review website?

It's ok :) And that looks like a good combination. You did say you would print once a week as a minimum, please note that inkjet printers will jam and break if you don't print often enough. I would highly recommend you print at least once every other week to keep that printer happy!

After market is great! They wouldn't sell it if the printer wouldn't take it. Now, I do know at work we use after market ink in our Epson printers, and while it does work the "out of ink" light flashes all the time. So, annoying, but it does work. Not sure about this exact case, but if it didn't work you could always return the ink!

I used to work in a retail office supply store selling electronics and doohickeys and what not. After 5 years, I learned how to ethically sell printers.

(Hint: the words "ethical" and "printer" almost NEVER appear in the same sentence - they're designed to be expensive from the get-go.)

That said, can you specifically answer the following questions so I can make a recommendation for you?

  • Do you need color printing, or can you make do with Black & White (mono) at home?
    • (you can print the odd color document at school or a library)
  • On average, how many pages per month/per week do you print?
    • Or, how fast do you go through 500 sheets (a ream) of paper?
  • What features do you need? Printing, scanning, and copying, obviously, but are you also after:
    • Faxing?
    • WiFi?
    • AirPrint?
    • Duplexing?
    • Bagel making?

I know you've answered some of these questions in your original post, but it would help just to clarify them.

Now, in general, printer manufacturer's have the cost per page / ink & supply game nailed down - they know how to make a killing.

Cheap printers have expensive ink, and cheap ink requires an expensive printer.

This is how the game is played - you don't like it? Then don't buy a printer. However, you can make it work if you buy the right printer for the job.

Laser printers generally have a lower cost per page, but will cost more up front, since the toner cartridges give you more for your money.

Monochrome laser printers are generally where I start for people who don't print a lot, and who don't need color.

- Sure, you might spend $100-$300 on a monochrome laser, but your cost per page can be as low as $0.02 cents.

Color lasers keep your cost per page low, around $0.06-$0.10 cents per page, but the machines go up in price considerably.

- A color laser for home use is usually overkill, since the machines start around $350 and go up from there with additional features.

Inkjet printers are tricky beasts - the market is so saturated with machines that should be more illegal to sell than crack on a street corner.

The trick here is to pick an inkjet that has all the features you need, but isn't priced at the bottom of the barrel.

Now, I'm not telling you to spend $200 on an inkjet printer - not unless you need the more business like features you'd get at that price bracket.

But the difference in ink costs between a printer priced lower than $100 and a machine in the $120-$180 rang is significant.

- Closest example would be HP's $50 printers having a cost of $0.22 per page, compared to their $120 machines having a cost of $0.08 per page.

I understand your English well enough - no problem :) Alright, so it sounds to me like you want a printer, scanner, copying machine with all the standard features that can handle 25 pages per week or less. (Works out to 100 pages a month, or 500 pages per 5 months.) Definitely do-able, and there are machines in your price range.

I would recommend spending a little over budget on the machine, since they will have less expensive inks.

Something in the $80-100 range would be a good buy for you.

(You can definitely cheap out on the machine, but you're going to be paying more for ink then, so its up to you.)

Printers that just take a Black and Color ink are going to run you through the roof compared to those that take 4 individual colors and a black.

Just be sure to print something at least once a month to keep the inkheads and tube clog free.

Personally, I would look at the HP OfficeJet 6978 All in One machine, since it's their lowest offering that takes individual color cartridges and a black.

http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/printers/hp-officejet-pro-6978-all-in-one-printer-t0f29a-b1h

Obviously DON'T PAY FULL PRICE for it - make sure to buy it on sale for ~$80-90, give or take.

A close second is the slightly lower model, the OfficeJet 6968 All in One, which is only lacking double sided scanning and scan to USB.

http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/printers/hp-officejet-pro-6968-all-in-one-printer-t0f28a-b1h

Once you have Scan to USB though, you might really enjoy using it, since Scanning over Wireless is extremely unreliable still.

Both of these models have a page cost between $0.06-$0.08 for black & white and $0.08-$0.12 for full page quality color.

Please note, the Canon MX922 is a good choice as well, since it has individual ink tanks, and the overall page cost is similar to the two HP printers above. I'm just not a fan of how long it can take a Canon inkjet to actually print a document once you hit print on your computer or phone, and thus cannot recommend them over HP personally. To be clear, Canon makes good printers, especially for photographs, but whoever programs their software doesn't know what they're doing.

Any other questions, just ask.

I don't think there are quality printer even under $100 with scanner. Unless you have to used. Brother and Canon are good brands. Maybe Epson. I had Samsung in the past, works good too, doesn't explode fortunately
