Hi all,

I am planning on getting a new CPU and the last time I did this pentium 3 just came out, its a whole new game out there today.

General Info:

Budget: $2000-$2500 CAD

Location: Canada

Programs: ETABS 2016 (lots of finite element analysis), Autodesk Revit

Games: Assassins Creed Series, Witcher Series, Tomb Raider (for now these are my to play list)

Monitors: 2 for now, maybe 3 later

Peripherals: I need to get Windows

Reason I am upgrading: My 13" 2010 Macbook Pro isn't gonna cut it

OC: No

Game Settings: as high as possible

I've been doing some research for the past couple of weeks and heres what I came up with so far:

CPU: Intel i7-6700K

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i

MB: ASUS Z170, not sure if I need a Z170 P, A, or whatever other types out there, I like the look of the Sabertooth but not sure about the value i get for that board

RAM: Ballistix Sport LT 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4 2400 (white)

SSD:  Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD

HDD: Western Digital 1 TB 3.5-Inch 7200 RPM SATA III

GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 or 1070, not sure if the 1070 is overkill or not but i like founder edition 1070, i think it will make the build look badass

Case: Not sure

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2

OS: Windows 10 64 bit

Some of the items chosen are purely aesthetic like the cooler, and the RAM because im going for a black/white/grey color scheme.

Let me know if I am missing anything, or if I can get better bang for buck on the items chosen above.

Thanks in advance!

750W is overkill, 500W is enough. 32 Gb of ram is overkill, 16Gb is plenty (8Gb is enough). What resolution do you play at? If 1080p 60hz, get the 1060 (6Gb, not 3Gb). Only get the 1070 for 1080p 144hz or 1440p+. I also wouldn't recommend the founders edition, lower performance for a higher price.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

Thanks for the input, I'll tone down on the RAM and PSU.

I want to try out 4K gaming, the old man has a nice screen he isn't using so i figure i'd give it a shot.

Yeah I looked into the founders edition one and figured its not the best purchase, so i would probably go for the SC since its not that much more than the normal ones.

One thing I have a qs on is the motherboard, its the hardest thing to pick out when building a new PC, there are so many different options and for someone who hasn't kept up with the tech, its been a nightmare coming up to speed.

Do you have experience with GB motherboards? and does it matter how many PCIe 3.0 slots come with it? I mean for someone who isn't going to be using 2 graphic cards, do users typically fill up PCIe slots and need more space?

Uh..no PCIe SSD? One of the hallmarks of Z170 over X79. Waaaay faster with a 950 Pro. Also, Corsair radiators are good, but the fans are junk. Grab an NZXT X51 that is coming out with included fluid-bearing fans.

I honestly did not know about the PCIe SSD until you brought them up, the price seems pretty high at this point in time and it might be worth it when the prices drop down a little more. Do PCIe adapters work well with the M.2 cards?
