Networking Question

Go to solution Solved by JohnKovac,

Solved.

So, pretty much my wired connection is faster directly from the modem itself when testing my internet connection. When I move my ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on my router, it significantly lowers my speed. Since my modem only has one port (ethernet - from modem to router), how can I have both my PC and router connected to my modem with one port at once.

I don't actually think it's possible, but I think your router is limiting your Internet connection speeds due to lack of power, so upgrading your router AFAIK is the only option if you want to actually have a network.

I have a Nighthawk R7000. I don't think that's the problem.

How fast is your connection when connected to the modem directly versus the router?

~130 compared to ~250

Do you have a computer that you can transfer a large file to, to see what the internal bandwidth is? What are you using to test your Internet connection speed?

I don't. I am using my ISP's closest server on speedtest.net.

I currently have the same router as you, so hopefully I'll be able to help.

My connection is also super jumpy regardless of it being wired. I just did a speed test and now its 90mb/s. When I was on the phone with Optimum they told me it was the amount of devices connected. I tried QoS and still having internet connection issues.

If you look here:

Hover over the download speed portion and you can see how it jumps up and down throughout this short test.

How many devices do you have connected?

11. I ordered 300mb/s connection just recently because of how cheap it was and I'm still not getting my speeds and it's super unstable even with wired connection. This mighjt also be an issue with my ISP. Optimum is trash when it comes to support.

Remove all of them, but leave your main computer and retest.

Should I use the attached devices section on our router's default gateway control panel and block the devices?

I'm thinking just disconnecting them altogether.

I can't really have people disconnect; too much confusion for them. Can I just block them and unblock them?

The problem with blocking them is that the router might still manage them in some fashion. But I guess if that's the only option, we can block them.

Your download speed tanked, but everything else is basically the same.

Do you have any ideas on what else I can do? Whenever someone else in my household is watching netflix my download speed drops like crazy.

I would expect them to depending on what they're trying to stream.
