I have never built a computer so excuse me if this question is stupid, but the motherboard will provide additional USB slots in the back of the case, correct?

Yep, you connect the case and motherboard headers usually on the bottom of the motherboard

 

and the motherboard has its own rear IO for your extra USB hubs
