Skylake XPS 15 OR Kaby Lake XPS 15

So I am REALLY struggling on choosing  my first ever laptop. Ive already decided on the Dell XPS 15 but should I wait for the refresh or should I pick up the current model? I found one with core i7, 500 ssd, 4k display, and 16 gb of ram for only $1500. Which is a hard deal to pass.  I rarely spend this much money but my budget is around $2000 so I really want to choose carefully. Would the new one be justified? Ill need this laptop to last me a few years, as long as possible I guess.

You are only going to see about 5% performance increase with the Kaby Lake over the Skylake chip. Unless you are nitpicking benchmarks you are probably not going to notice a difference.

EDIT: Also my money is on Dell not upgrading to 10 series graphics and I am expecting them to keep the 960m.

Really? Hmmm. I'd say maybe a 1050.

damn they don't have any 1050 laptops you're right. Are mobile 1050s even a thing? I haven't seen any on the market

Well 1050ti is replacing the 960m lineup. So...basically the Y700, 7559 should all be getting refreshed to the 1050(ti) when it comes out.

It really shouldn't matter, there's like a 10% synthetic difference, so like a 5% real difference. Can't remember if they're updating the GPU though, if they are I'd hold off for that

So if they do upgrade the gpu which they have a pretty good chance of doing, I go for the new one?

When is it coming out? Even I am waiting for a new (first ever laptop) and I'm confused as to wait for the update on 7559(not sure if they will go for 10 series or 980M) or the XPS 15 ( again not sure if they will go for 10 series or 980M or they will stick to 960M )

Nobody putting 980ms in those things. The cost is too high. They'll lose money. 980m's are a big chip and although they SHOULD depreciate in value, mobile GPUs don't really do that so they retain retail value even if they're outdated.

How much more performance will it get though? With Kaby Lake and 1050. With the special discounts running around its really tempting. Would it be worth the extra? I of  course want the newest and greatest but if the old one is at a good deal I really dont want to pass. The one I'm looking at is around $1800 (will drop more) with Core i7, 500 gb ssd, 16 gb ram, windows 10 pro, and a 4k display.

It's not gonna be cheap, when they refresh it. That 500gb model will be over 1,700-2,100 dollars.

My bad, I meant to say it be more expensive than now. Probably $300-500 dollars more, but I'm just speculating.
