Is my HDD dead?

Go to solution Solved by TAHIRMIA,

It's dead and the worst thing is it's not covered by warranty because it's an OEM drive when I bought from amazon. Gonna be calling WD support first thing in the morning ??

I was reinstalling windows on a computer and transfering files and the hdd was hanging out on the floor. I was on my phone and dropped it, my phone has a shockproof case and it landed straight onto the hdd and then there was some sort of clicking and It was transferring things and just stopped. I restarted and then I got stuck on the bios splash screen and the clicking is still there. Did I just kill it? it's a WD Blue 500gb. I thought to leave it for a while and then go back to it but I thought I should just check hear to be sure.

kill it? probably not. create an error? yep.

restart, maybe it'll be OK. otherwise you're done transferring files.

I'd say probably, yeah. Although if you know anybody who's chill with you borrowing theirs, it wouldn't hurt. Or you could make a bootable USB just to make sure it was the drive that's the problem.

Also, have you tried plugging it in to a different SATA port with a different cable?

I'll try it, it just happened and I wanted to make sure so I asked

Hi there :)

I'm sorry to hear about what happened.

Do you have any important data on that WD Blue? If yes your safest bet would be contacting a data recovery company as they ahve the highest chance of recovering the data. Mind that their services can be quite costly.

I would try connecting the drive internally and see if it gets detected in the BIOS, Device Manager, Disk Management and by WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic. Also, check if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests.

How was the drive connected to the PC (internally, externally with a cable, enclosure, dock station, etc.)?
