Hey.

Can someone please explain to me the difference between the PCI lanes on a motherboard?

What's the difference between 16x etc.

 

What happen is you plug you graphics card in different lanes?

CPU - i7 8700K / Motherboard - ROG Strix Z370 E/ RAM - 32GB Cosair Vengeance DDR / GPU  - GTX 1080ti - EVGA FTW3 / PSU - Seasonic Snow Silent 750W / Cooling - Cryorig H7 Monitor - Acer X34 Predator / Sound - Corsair Void - Case - Meshify C

16x just means that there are 16 pci lanes to that connector. the more lanes it has the more bandwidth it has available to it. then there also is different generations of pci lanes, pci expressv 3 is the most readily available to consumers right now. you can run your graphics card in x8 or even x4 if you like, but that might bottleneck the graphics card depending on how strong it is.
