So I've recently ordered my first custom PC build, because the old one, which i got for pretty cheap a year ago, died. (And because I wanted a new one, tbh) Now, the shipping took a lot longer than I originally expected, so I played around with the old PC for a bit. And voila, it booted. I didn't know how the hack this could happen, because i thought the psu fried the GPU and the mainboard (and half a year ago, when i tried to boot the exact same combination of components, it didn't do anything). So now i have a fully built PC with an i7 870, 8GB of RAM, 64GB of SSD and 1.5TB of HDD Storage.  And a crappy HD6570. Which is crap. But thankfully holidays are coming up, so i thought if I could get a nice (somewhat cheap) GPU for that build and give it to my younger brother. I don't want to spend too much, but ~200€ would be acceptable. I have done some research but I'm not too sure about what to get.

My (for now) options are:

  • GTX 770 (for ~70€)
  • GTX 970 (for ~170-200€)
  • RX480 4GB ( a bit over 200)
  • RX470 (a bit less over 200)

I'm not a big fan of AMD products (mainly because of that 6570, have I mentioned that it is crap?), but I'm willing to give them a try, if they could satisfy my needs better than those GTXs.

What are my needs? Well this machine has a somewhat powerful i7 in it, so i may be using it as a secondary workstation/ network render host for my 3D work (3ds max, vray). But gaming will be the main task will be definitely gaming. By gaming i mean mostly minecraft and Farming Simulator, at nice framerates (which won't be too much of a problem, but nobody knows where the journey will go ^_^)

So hopefully you guys will have some ideas of what to do...

edit: holy crap I messed that sentence up....

i remember when 6570 was good (joking):L damn im old........ have you considered a 1060 6gb? roughly the same price as the 480, more vram and slightly better.

Actually not. I totally forgot about the ti. the regular 780 was a bit too expansive for my taste, coming in at 170€, but as it seams, the 780ti is just slightly more expensive (at least on ebay) and as powerful as a 1060... EDIT: but thats about the price for a less power hungry 970..

Well this one never really performed too well. It is the XFX passive version and i think it throttles under load.

I have. but at 270-300 bucks it is a bit out of my budget. At least for what I need.

I will say the 480 really. slightly better performance and you will have 4gb of vram. Though the 970 is still a good card, and keep in mind the 480 is just barely better. so really you are kinda looking at identical cards in terms of performance.

So for me it seems that the 970 would be the better choice, because i could save up to 60 bucks (if i can snag a good deal). Since the performance/power consumption difference is somewhat negligible, this should be better in terms of "bang for the buck"?.

i'd go with a RX 470 4GB. The 470 is within GTX 970 performance. Sometimes above, sometimes below.

Great cards for a reasonable price.

Why not the 480 4GB as @mstoebich says the price difference is minimal?
