Posted November 11, 2016 A very quick post that will require some very quick advice: there's a flash sale going on today here in Malaysia (something to do with the 11/11 date thing, go figure) and I had been keen to upgrade my EVGA GTX 960 SSC 2GB card even though I only got it in July - yes I know, totally bad timing. Time till end of sale: 3 hours 30 minutes. I am mainly shopping at www.lazada.com.my and www.gemfive.com/my/ - these are the sites with the discounts at about 10% and also offer 0% installment payments. Thoughts? PS: Black Friday sales here aren't as big a deal as in the US or elsewhere, unfortunately. EDIT: I'm currently using an i5-6500; monitor is 24" 1080p. Posted November 11, 2016 If you really feel the need to upgrade, then a 1060/RX480 for 1080p are perfect. Get a 1070 for 1440p. The 960 should still be fine for 1080p though, so you'll get much better performance if you wait for Volta/Vega That's an F in the profile pic Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/689193-upgrading-from-gtx960/#findComment-8844407 Share on other sites
 Posted November 11, 2016 Unless you're upgrading to 1440p then you should keep your 960 and wait for the next GPU generations. As I said in my earlier post, if you're going 1440p then get a 1070 That's an F in the profile pic Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/689193-upgrading-from-gtx960/#findComment-8844592 Share on other sites
 Posted November 11, 2016 The 380, 380x, 390, 390x, 960 and 970 cards are still very good cards for 1080p gaming. And there is no reason to upgrade, unless you wish to play at significantly higher frame rates (120, 144) or at 1440p or even 4k resolution. Do as me and save your money and see what AMD offers in 2017 before spending hundreds on a mediocre upgrade. Posted November 11, 2016 Your card is still fine for 2016. Could even slip into 2017 with some games on high settings at 1080p. I'd say wait for 2017. While waiting you should be saving up, as Vega is just around the corner. The next tick of Nvidia could be 2018 which is quite far. You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog. You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are. Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart How I plan my builds - Spoiler For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system." Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?" Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget." Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU." Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year." Posted November 11, 2016 Author Thanks for all the advice everyone, definitely appreciate the quick-fire replies. I eventually decided to hold the trigger and buy a bit more time; the 1070 was quite tempting but I didn't find a good deal on any. Holding out for 2017 seems doable although the temptation is real.
