Overclocking i3 530

I have a Asrock h55m-le and a i3 530. I'm planning to overclock my i3 530 and using an aftermarket heatsink. A friend told me that I need a K series cpu and a Z series mobo to overclock it. Can anybody clarify this? Does this mean I can't overclock my i3 530? Thank you.

No, you can overclock it still.. it's just not as easy. Search for BCLK overclocking.

He is wrong. Well, not wrong, but not right. Yes, you need a K series to overclock because the multiplier is locked, but Z motherboards are only for LGA 1150 and LGA 1151. (Maybe there are more sockets that I am not aware of. Please correct me if I'm missing them.) Your i3 is a 1st generation. It doesn't use Z chipsets. They are not even compatible. You can overclock your i3, but I doubt it will be worth it. I myself have an old i3 540 that I used 2 years ago that still works, but overclocking did not give me any actual benefit other than 56 points more in cinebench.

LMGTFY is not allowed as far as I remember

But for such an old cpu like that it's not worth it going overeclock at all

should probably add that OCing an i3 530 is probably not very worth it beyond "for science", they're getting quite the age on them and arent really up to par anymore..

even if you can squeeze out another 10% with BCLK overclocking (which will potentially turn the rest of your system on the iffy side) it's not a notable increase in performance.

here's how far we've gotten since the i3 530:

that i3 530 market share jump at the end.

iirc first gen cpu can be oc without needed of a k or z mobo

tbh i dont see why you wouldnt overclock it, its free performance and it should do 3.6-3.8ghz easy which is a big jump.

LOL, well done, you spotted my mis-type before I noticed it (was all of like 10 seconds after posting I noticed it), not mis-spell BTW... and since when has posting url's been not allowed? even if it is a google search link.
