Purchasing a GPU

I am looking to purchase a new GPU, and I cannot decide between a 6GB GTX 1060 or a GTX 1070. I have $400 to spend on a card; however, I am only rocking a 1080p monitor right now, and I know that the 1070 is totally overkill for that. I would definitely be looking to upgrade the monitor, eventually, and 3440x1440 would probably the resolution I would be looking into. Could a 1070 power a good gaming experience at that resolution, or would it be better for me to get the 1060 now, and then get a different GPU whenever I would go to get the new monitor? Probably would upgrade the monitor within about a year or two. Just interested in people's opinions on this, it would definitely help me make my decision a lot easier! Thank you all so much!

I'd go for the 1070 to save the trouble of upgrading again when you get a new monitor, especially with your budget.  It will do 1440p quite well on most titles, on something like Witcher 3 you won't be on ultra settings, but it'll still be on the higher end.

i dont think you can max out 3440x1440 even with a 1070. 1070 can play 2560x1440 maxed out but not not ultrawide at 60fps. if youre not getting the ultrawide anytime soon, get the 1060 and upgrade later on as in a year or two the 1070 will be underpowered at that res in modern titles.
