g3258 upgrade path.

cadd

rocking a g3258 right now, its a amazing chip for the price but its just doesnt have 4 cores. Obviously im running lga 1150 with a h81m-p33 and oc'd to 4.4ghz but im looking to upgrade to a 1050ti for christmas. I was looking at the 4690k on ebay and saw many prices of around 150$ CAD and thinking about ditching the 1050ti and getting the 4690k instead, however i saw a random forum post talking about a Xeon e3 1231-v3. looked up some benchmarks and its little less powerful for about 20$ cheaper on ebay, so idk. I'm considering just splurging on the 1231-v3 and waiting a few months to get the 1050ti later. I mainly play games like CS:GO, h1z1 KOTK, Overwatch, and early access unoptomized tiltes (which are mostly cpu intensive tbh) HOWEVER, I really wanna play Battlefield 1, tried it in the beta and it was unplayable. 30 fps with stutters and unbearable input lag.

Im really torn on what to get.

current specs:

g3258 4.4ghz 1.32v

gtx 550ti 1gb

8gb ddr3

8700k/1070ti/16gb ram

Either you can withstand the GPU or you don't play what your CPU can't handle.

Remember that the i5 is OCable, while the xeon "isn't", so the 'little difference in performance' might not be THAT little. Why not considering an even cheaper i5 then?

rig: i7 4770k @4.1Ghz (delidded), Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600Mhz, ROG Maximus VI Hero, Noctua NH-D14, EVGA GTX980SC, Samsung 850 EVO 500GB, Corsair SF600, self-built wooden Case, CoolerMaster QuickFire TK, Logitech G502, Blue Yeti, BenQ GW2760HS

Like what? i looked up the xeon benchmarks compared to a i5 4690k at 4.4ghz, and the Xeon has HyperThreading, and many compare its performance to a i7 4770. I don't think i'd go for any cheaper i5's as if i got a i5 i'd like to OC it, unless there is a really good price/performance deal on something like a 4460.

Sorry, was a mistake not to look at the specs. Since it's basically an i7, I would personally consider going for it.

Probably is too good to be true.  Lots of dead CPUs on eBay. Check and make sure that it's not listed as such. Could also just be at the very beginning of an auction--lots of auctions start out at stupid low prices to draw up bids later on.

Unless you're running your Pentium on a Z97 motherboard (you're not), you won't be able to overclock anything but the Pentium on it. If upgrading to a 4690K would involve buying a new motherboard to overclock it on, don't bother. An E3-1231V3 is better than a 4690K anyway, imo. No overclocking, true, but eight threads as opposed to four makes it more versatile and a better long-term buy if games start pouring out that are optimized to hit on every thread available. Plus, you don't have to drop another $100+ on a Z97 motherboard.

I'd grab either the Xeon or a locked i5 (no K-SKUs; you can't do anything with them anyway) to use with your existing motherboard and GPU. The 550 Ti isn't a BF1 card, no, but it can still handle plenty of games at 1080p. When you've got the cash scrounged up for a 1060 6GB (yes, skip the 1050 Ti--it's not a long-term fix for games like BF1), grab it. They should start to come down in price and get a little south of MSRP before too long here. The mini 1060 6GB cards are already right around the $260 mark.

$USD. The 1050 Ti isn't bad, but unless you specifically need that card for some reason (like power requirements), the RX 480 and 1060 6GB are far better buys.

Yea I get that, its just that the 1050ti totals up to 240$ and the cheapest 1060 3b totals to 320$ which is way out of my budget, but yea i do agree the 1060 3gb is a much better deal but unless prices come down allot. the 1050 ti is my best choice.

Like I said, it's not a bad card at all. It's actually a solid value by itself. I haven't seen benchmarks, but unless you're married to NVIDIA, it might be worth exploring the RX 470 as well. The 1050 Ti will beat a 460.

wow... Completely forgot about the RX 470, and to be honest thats a CRAZY deal. about 275$ CAD total for a rx 470, 40$ more then a 1050ti for almost 25% more performance.

defnitely not going to get the 1050ti anymore, either the RX 470 or the Xeon e3 1231-v3.

might look into buying a used mid-tier GPU and/or CPU.

lots of deals on the mid-tier GPUs 390/390x, 970 that are still relevant. and still in a warranty period.

CPU the same way.

I'd go for 1050TI or RX480. DON'T FORGET ABOUT USED CARDS. Look for used 780TI, 970, 280x. This card is pretty darn good and it you can play everything maxed out on 1080p easily.

When it comes to CPU, I'd consider saving up some money or even selling the current CPU you have, and then add money to get 4790K which will serve you for many many years. It's a beast of a CPU for gaming.

Get the 1060 3GB instead since the gain in performance is kind of big jumping from 1050ti to a 1060 for a price difference of around 60usd

you should buy a i74790k or  a  xeon   4 cores + ht  but xeon have  lower speed  like 3.4 ghz  they cost  more   with more speed  and some ones dont  even have igp

i upgrade from a pentium g3258 to  an i7 4790k  i think on buying  an xeon or  a i5   but  the  i7 is the best  option  you can buy.i even  dont oc  just  on stock have an amazing performance.

my mb is a msi b85i itx  i can oc on that motherboard , you  dont need an z97 obligatory to oc  but  the power phases are much beter  on  z97 motherboard,s

but  if  you play  cs:go    i5-4690K   with some oc  will have better performance than  an xeon

you are wrong  you can oc  not  only on z97  motherboard is not  lock like skylake!! just is more secure  and better..

going to an i7 4790k   will be the best option no oc  but   great performance at stock
