There is an issue with my PC where when I turn it on it will complete its start up, but then go directly to a black screen. I can't do anything from the black screen other than move my mouse around. When I try to turn off the computer from the power button, the windows log in screen will flash for a second and then the computer will proceed to turn off.

Sounds like a corrupted OS install.

Send your drives to a data recovery service, see what they can do.

I say that, becuase the OS is corrupted, you cant access you files without special tools that you wont have.

And if you were just to re-install windows, you would ahve to wipe your drives, deleting all your files

I have not tried to make it boot into safe mode. I will give that a shot. I think UberGamerKing might be right. This is an older computer that I have not logged into for a while. I know I used to be able to get into windows even with this problem but the computer would shut down after a while. I recently started watching a lot of videos and I think it was because he computer needed to be cleaned. There was a immense amount of dust in the PC. So if UberGamerKing is right and I am somehow able to log into Windows. If I get all the files onto a USB flash drive hat I want to keep or send it out. Would the files be okay to transport into a new computer? I am looking to replace this old PC with a new one that I want to build. 聽I have a lot of music that I want to keep from this old pc. Also, thank you it's for the very quick response. your help is very much appreciated.

What about, when you build the new PC, taking the hard drive out of the old one, and putting it in the new one and transferring files that way? Also I've sometimes used Linux on a USB key in similar situations to ones mentioned previously, where the OS wouldn't boot or something & files were wanted, or cloning, etc.
