RAM COMPATIBILITY

Hello, so I am wondering whether how RAM compatibility are determined? Because are the ram are determined by the number of ddr? By the number of channel? I do some research on the mobo that I wanted to buy which is MSI Z170M MORTAR. I look at the official msi website, and I found that the ram that I wanted which is AVEXIR CORE SERIES 2X8 GB aren't there in the compatible list. But, I checked at pcpartpicker that there are no compatibility issues. Can I buy RAM that are not listed in the compatibility list? Thanks in advance

It should be fine, it doesn't have to be on the compatibility list (for that particular motherboard) to work
