Yes an S4 is still pretty good. Mine lives to this day thanks to the battery being replacable. Might want to consider a second hand LG G4 which is even better with higher capacity batt and IPS screen.

I don't think Samsung supports it anymore but there are still lots of Samsung batteries and aftermarket batteries on amazon.

so that mean I will not get update

Samsung doesn't make parts anymore. You wont get the newest OS unless you install it your self. As for apps almost every app out today work just fine and update. Ive only ever found 2 apps that didn't work for me.

Even with the latest phones, I feel better off installing a custom ROM as no manufacturer/carrier bloat. Better performance and battery life too. Why wait for official updates? They tend to be held back for months or discontinued altogether, in an attempt to sell you even newer phones when they are out.

how to do for the s4 and what are the risks

Going from stock to custom ROM is no simple task. The procedure is not the same for all custom ROMs. Just search for the ROM you want on XDA and follow the developer's instructions to install. Make sure you get your exact phone model right (it should be printed on a sticker in the phone's battery compartment, else use google)

As for risk, you might hard-brick your device which turns it into a paperweight. Just be sure to flash the new ROM properly and you should be fine.

I just want the later update with out blot ware
