Dedicated Game Server GPU?

Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

GPU won't be used at all.

Most servers have a basic gpu built in like a ati es1000 that will output video.

Everything is done on teh cpu.

And what kinda CPU would be good? like a 4 core 3.5 GHz?
And would an SSD be a good idea?

How much do you want to spend?

How many users?

Do you want to host it your self or something that is hosted for your like AWS?

Internet connection is probably going to be your biggest limiting factor (which is why most people just rent out)

You don't need a huge connection to host a server, as long as its not like a 100 players. Its more about it being way easier, and your internet doesn't go down when the server gets DOSed.

Maybe like 10-20 People. And I plan on having it running next to my gaming tower with a little monitor on top. Maybe like 600-900$ including a QLogic 100 Mbps/1 Gbps/10 Gbps Network Adapter

With 10-20 people you can run this on almost anything.

No use for a monitor, use remote desktop(or simmilar solution)

No need for anouther nic, game servers use very little bandwidth(100mbit would be more than enough.)

Oh, okay

a quad core might not be enough for 20 players unless you turn the render distance way down, don't know what CPU it is though.

I'm thinking an Intel Xeon E5-1630 V3 3.7GHz Quad-Core

Id go with somethign like a nuc if you want it small and quiet.

Other wise, id get a i3. You don't need that much cpu power.

20 players with high render distance can be rather demanding with how bad optimizations are, unless its changed a lot from when I last ran a server. Helps if they're in a confined area, but if they spread out, it adds a lot more load.

a render distance of 32 chunks puts a 30% load on my server with 1 player. This is on a windows, i7 4790k. not sure if that can be improved. 2 players in the same area shouldn't increase the load, but move the second player far away, and the load would theoretically double.  I would have maybe a 50% load. You can do some testing for yourself with your own computer, but from what I've experienced, minecraft loves it's CPU.
