So I overclocked my I5 6400 to 4.2ghz is it the same as a I5 6600

not really. You'd get higher clocks out of a 6600k, but these no guarantee you'll reach that with a normal 6600. Might only get 4.1

So I overclocked i5 6400 to 4.2 on a Asrock z170 pro 4s board and i was wondering if its as good as a i5 6600 are the 2 on the same chip-set 

googling has given me mixed results wondering because im think about buying a i5 6600 is it worth it if i already got a 4.0 clock?

If all else like cache, architecture and cores are the same, you should have same performance at indentical speeds. But there might be some binning done so that the unlocked CPU's  have more potential headroom. Because as far as I know there is no 6400k...

Nope! not a K model....... but AMD has a K model ... A6-6400K but hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm not really the same bird.... apples and oranges..... lol
