Torn between the EVGA models, superclocked ACX and the FTW.

ACX is £15 cheaper, and I can get it delivered in 2 hours as its on the amazon grocery delivery app, so I can get it on payday.

FTW is the bigger cooler, although come feb I will be water cooling it so only gonna make use of the cooler for a couple months, but it also has the 2 8 pins, which as far as I can tell doesn't make the slightest difference to the OC potential, but I am water cooling it later, not sure if that changes it as I can't find much numbers wise of a water cooled 1070.

opinions would be nice.

I'd go with the ACX, the cooling fans work great and I never go over 75C and rarely over 70C. I'd like to note I run the fans on aggressive, but since I have fans in my room to cool it off from the heat of the computer I can never hear my computer or gpu fans anyway. The FTW may have a bigger cooler (unsure) but it's kind of unnecessary and the additional clock speed provided can be achieved with a light OC or even just with gpuboost 3. I hit 2000mhz with my gpu without an overclock. When I was looking at for my GPU I choose between these too and went with the ACX.

The coolers are the same between the SC and FTW. The difference is RGB, a higher factory clock, and a bit better efficiency(all though that is untested or proven).

If you want to overclock your self don't get the FTW.

The FTW cooler is at least taller than the ACX and it has larger fans, I would be more tempted by it was it staying aircooled but it isn't so important for this build, still not sure if the second 8 pin will make a difference to the water cooled options, would be nice since the pack of cables come with 2 PCI cables, but I don't want to buy a GPU just so I use a nice cable

I will have to dig my 2 ftw cards out and look, but I don't recall it having any larger fans honestly.(I have both FTW and SC here in the studio) If it does, then they just enlarged the openings as they are the same physical size as the SC. As for the second 8 pin, there has been no proof thus far of it doing anything yet. In my own testing (have done way to much) I have yet to see it make a true difference.

Even their hybrid options and custom water cooled options have not made massive alterations to over clocks yet. Maybe down the road as the drivers mature, but even then I don't think boost 3.0 will allow it to be much different.

currently I would not go with any of them atm... EVGA 1070 and 1080 have been catching on fire: http://wccftech.com/nvidia-gtx-1080-evga-catches-fire-video/

granted they are being good about their RMA I would personally stay away from buying a 1070 from evga for the moment till they get there act together with their products.

I got the sizes off of a youtube review so could be wrong

I have seen this, as far as I found, you can get a thermal pad pack from them to fix the issue, and the email I have gotten from them say that they are also releasing a firmware update, not sure how much that will help by its self though?

you are correct. though since you are looking for new I would recommend letting them fix it first before buying it so that you dont have any issues.

"They have been catching fire" is a bit of an over exaggeration do to the internet being as it is. Yes, there have been some minor thermal issues but only in extreme cases did they fail to that extent.

Look up Gamers Nexus he has a good video and article over the resolution to the issue via EVGA

I'm not sure when you're ordering from/through Amazon if the cards will have the vBios update, but cards ordered directly from EVGA will ship with the vBios updates by default (since the 1st of November).
The thermalpads aren't meant to "fix the issue" - They're meant to achieve lower temps, and the vBios update tweaks the fan curve (which can be done manually via Afterburner or Precision X).
A point in favor for the FTW-edition is dual bios mode where you're able to "fuck one up, retrace your steps and then fix it".

I haven't had issues with my own micron-FTW card, as many others haven't.
Since I've never tried a GPU mod before I'll take this as a free learning experience. I get free thermalpads, and EVGA stands behind their warranty if I screw it up :x
That makes me a lot more comfortable - And even if someone isn't comfortable running the vBios exe file (kek), they're able to get an advanced RMA (You get a replacement card sent, before you send yours back).

Do as you wish.
It took me nearly 3 months deciding which card, and brand to buy.
But ultimately I'm more than happy I went with EVGA :)

Im gonna see what this week hold for these cards, can't do anything until next thursday when I get paid, and that is with the hoping that work finally sort my backdated pay rise from august, if not then this whole thing is gonna have to wait :/

If you can hold it off, you might be able to save a few more dollars when black friday comes around.
I wouldn't expect much though, but even 5-10% is welcomed haha :D

was actually thinking about this today, my only concern is I don't recall seeing anything high end on amazon last year, black friday doesn't seem as big in the UK, we have no shops that stock 10 series cards on the shelves so I might just pick it up, have a week to think about it

Might want to hold off and wait for a lil while for the newer batches with the thermal pads.

Why risk doing it yourself when you can get evga to do it for you?

I would imagine its not difficult, would be the same tear down as installing an EK block no?

Nope not difficult but modifying always comes with a certain risk.

I'd wait a lil bit for the newer batches. But if you want to apply the pads yourself its also defenitly ok.
