I was about to look into buying a 2nd hand GT740 for CUDA support (super cheap, should be better than my GT730's) but noticed this the gainward one was not the same as the GDDR5 version, is the reference DDR3 one different to the reference GDDR5 version? I'd rather stay with a reference design, but most DRR3 versions look the same, being almost a half hieght, while most GDDR5 versions look about the same size as the GTX 750ti.

Yours faithfully

for cuda i would not necessarily recommend it for a 40 series card , aim for a used 670 or 750 those will vastly outperform it

RyzenAir : AMD R5 3600 | AsRock AB350M Pro4 | 32gb Aegis DDR4 3000 | GTX 1070 FE | Fractal Design Node 804
RyzenITX : Ryzen 7 1700 | GA-AB350N-Gaming WIFI | 16gb DDR4 2666 | GTX 1060 | Cougar QBX

PSU Tier list

Heat out put and size in a U1 rack chassis are a major issue, I mostly use normal GTX 750/GTX 750ti, GT730s, so I wanna look at the Gt740 since I really don't see too much of a benefit from the reference GTX 750ti, running 24/7 boinc doesn't benefit all that much from the slight extras in the GTX 750ti, plus the cooler has to be placed so that it would cool better in the chassis, and the GT740 already has a downward fin cooler like I put on the others.

Yours faithfully

There is a combination of the GDDR and DDR ones, what ever I can buy cheap 2nd hand. The GDDR ones do not perform all that much better, which is why I stopped buying them, the same again with the 750ti's, they have become rarer where I am and just don't offer the same low power as the slightly lower gaming but similarly scoring boinc cobblestones.

honestly , just buy whatever its cheaper , if you use em for folding or whatever the framebuffer is pretty much unimportant

yeah, SETI@home. While my Dual Xeon (old LGA 1366 sockets) even beat my slighly more modern gaming PC (2012 vintage, i5 3570k/HD7870) the GPU just adds a cherry on top.
