This is what I was thinking to use to build a Minecaft and Home media server. Minecraft side no more than 10 people with one or two mods. As a media network back up and as a file server to stream movies off of. I not sure which cooler would be better and I don't really care about the case just as long as it can be expanded to hold at least 6 3.5" drives. Anyone know of a case that has external 3.5 drives? Is this a good build or am I totally off? What would would be a good OS?

Thanks for the fast reply. Are xeon just generally better for servers? Should I just ignore typical bench marks when looking to build a server? http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Xeon-E3-1231-v3-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700K/m11040vs3502. Is 16 gb of ram enough?

16gb of ram is fine. mc needs 4 and 12 for raid. it is just a cheaper but older i7. it also has ecc. I run a mc server right now with 4gb of ram a core 2 duo on linux and it is fine.

Ok, would you recommend using linux on my server? Do i need a separate raid controller?

quote people and for a server it is up to you. no you don't need a raid card unless you use more than 6 total drives.

I was not planing on using it. What about transcoding is it necessary/ could a Pentium handle the requirements to stream HD movies. Or am I miss interpreting what transcoding is. I read somewhere that off the shelf NAS can't transcode at full 1080p would a system with such a CPU suffer the same issue?

Is is critical to have ECC in a home server? How many people do you have on at a time? Does having multiple mods on effect the performance?

it is not. the server I have had max 6 people on. mods can effect performance but it is fine,.

A Pentium can transcode quite well for 1080p. Transcoding is essentially encoding a movie being packaged a bit tighter while going down the wire to be played on a less powerful machine. My explanation is very rudimentary so I suggest reading on it to know the details.

A normal home NAS won't benefit much from ECC, but if you're serving to multiple users, each of which will write and read, ECC will make a difference if errors arise. Think of it as protection.

It sounds like he only needs the server for Minecraft and not to play on. @greencode should be better off getting the Pentium if this is the case.

to run both at the same time would overload the pentium

yeah because it has 4 core 8 threads
