So recently, I have been having severe issues with my internet speeds. My upload speeds are fine, but my download speeds are terrible. (when downloading steam games it goes below 100kbs). Web surfing is generally slow, and videos take forever. I am using a wifi adapter plugged into a usb port on my mobo(tp-link tlw725n), and my router isnt very far (just down some stairs). Task manager says I have 1-2mbps while steam and chrome speed test say I have much less than that. Any suggestions or solutions?

BTW multiplayer games generally run fine unless i'm hosting. I usually have between a ping 50-80

Is the computer the only device with slow down issues? Is WiFi your only option for connecting the PC to the router? What speeds should you be getting if it all worked correctly?

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special-_-

If possible move the computer to the same room as the router and see if the speed improves. (As a test, then report back)

no dice. speeds are the same

It's probably the USB adapter then. I would recommend you get another one. Or, maybe better yet, get a Ethernet over powerline kit.

Something like this, but they can be found cheaper on other sites.

Mmm... not really. If it's just the computer with the issue and distance from the router doesn't help then it's most likely a hardware issue. I doubt it's software, unless you have some weird spyware that's hogging up your bandwidth. I suppose you could try running a virus scanner or downloading a program like NetBalancer by SeriousBit to monitor your computer's total bandwidth usage.

Using NetBalancer to test how much data your computer is transmitting would at least be a free and relatively painless way to make sure it really is the hardware and not some program using up all your connection.

I suppose you could, but a program like that shows you more details, and lets you monitor the bandwidth usage from a ticker in the bottom left on the taskbar.
