It comes down to personal taste. I, and most people around here, prefer the feel of mechanical. I'd recommend going to a local best buy or other computer store and testing out some mechanical keyboards.

IMO:

Cherry Clears  > other mechanical switches >> good laptop-style chichlets (read: XPS/Mac style) >>>>>> regular desktop membrane.

Hi I am new to PC gaming. I have only had a Gaming PC for a few months. I am wondering if Mechanical keyboards have any benifit.

They give you more response, there is a bump when you press down.

There are many different types but Cherry MX Browns are the best all round.

A membrane keyboard has the same thing but doesn't have the mechanism on the left part of that picture.

Mechanical keys can have a bump or have no bump (linear). The bump in mechanical keyboards though means that once you're past it, the switch has activated. Membrane keyboards, it's possible to get past the bump, but not have the switch create contact, though this requires deliberation or you must have a really light touch.

But mostly it's about feel. Membrane keyboards can feel mushy or harsh.

Also, a mechanical switch requires consistent force whereas membranes require a significantly higher force to get the key moving in the first place.

Yes, it is actually harder to make a mistake when using a mechanical keyboard with for example blues or brown, because the consistency is so great you know exactly when you did and when you didn't press, which can be tricky on membrane keyboards. Mechanical are also a lot more durable, a good switch gets worn out a lot later than a rubber membrane.
