A Challenge.

Hey all,

I have a friend who wants a PC for video editing. HIs budget is $600 MAX. The less the better. He needs a graphics card, but a 1050 Ti / RX470 / RX480 will do. Graphics and gaming aren't the most important. He has another computer that can game pretty well, but this video editing is his main focus.

Depending on what he uses to edit, and his methodology from start to finish, the GPU could be very important.

Linus did discover that a 6700K can handily match a Xeon e5 when the programs make use of GPGPU capability.

Hm... lemme check then. I don't know a lot about video editing PCs.

iMovie and Adobe Premier.

A quick search on an Apple forum produced that iMovie does see a performance boost from GPU acceleration, but not a huge boost. Intel HD Graphics are more than sufficient for that.

Adobe Premiere CS6 on the other hand, sees a decent boost with the GTX 660, but doesn't see improvement after that. Premiere CC will sees a wall with the Firepro W7000, Quadro K2000, and GTX Titan X. Interestingly, the software uses CUDA acceleration, so a cheaper NVidia card will be the better choice. Something along the lines of the 1050Ti would be a good minimum card for decent performance.
