Hi there,

I've just installed my new Cisco ae6500 router. Everything is set-up and connected. But, I have one Ethernet cable running upstairs to my switch (and then PC, Xbox, TV, Server etc.), so I don't have to run multiple cables.

With the new router, I can set priorities for devices and apps, but... all the devices that are connected to the switch are shown as one device.

I have an un-managed AT-FS716L switch from Allied telesis.

I'm going to buy a managed one, but till then i't would be nice if it's working until then.

greats,

I don't think buying a managed switch will solve this. Managed switched are mainly for advanced networks.

This seems more like a limitation of the AE6500 that it only can see what's connected directly to it.

So I fixed it. I don't know what happened but by accident I switch the power switch on the switch (a lot of "switching" :p) and i turned it back on and all my devices where detected.

@ssoele So I don't get any advantages of buying a managed switch ?

Unless you need VLAN'S and other advanced stuff there isn't much use for a managed switch, though if you are into networking id get one for experimentation :)

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

What he/she said. You only need managed switches for VLANs, port mirroring, port limiting, ...

Just stay with that switch, don't spend money on things you don't need.

People buying managed switches for home networking make me lol. It's kind of cool to say you did it, and if you're studying networking I guess it's a good idea, but otherwise 20$ 8 port gigabit switches all day err day.
Makes me think of the time my Network Management teacher said that almost all switches sold to consumers are managed switches. Of course I bursted out in laughter but apparently he didn't meant it as a joke... I'm not following his classes any more.

He/She could be true in some sense, people will usually buy a switch w/o looking if its managed or not and since both can work as a plain switch they don't see the difference. Also lets face it a managed switch has more features listed on the box, anyway you can see where i'm going with this.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

I get that there are some consumer grade switches out there with basic features, but I've seen people on facebook that I went to highschool with talking about buying powerconnects and catalysts for their 2 computer and xbox home network... give me a break.

sorry for the very late answer, currently having school exams :(

So thanks for all the replays.

So I will end up buying a new managed switch, just for experimentation, just like Broseephus said.

Also read somewhere on the net, that managed switches have better speed performance because of the chip thats inside. I think it's nonsense, but i don't know for sure.
