Hello, I built a new PC

  • Intel Core i5-6600K (Not overclocked)
  • Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU cooler
  • GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Factory settings/gaming mode)
  • 1TB WD Blue HDD
  • Samsung S20B300 1600x900 (yes 900p. Gonna upgrade next week lol)

I want a cooler that can let me OC to at least 4.2GHz.

With this current setup, I tried OCing up to 4.3GHz but my PC ended up crashing during stress test.

Options for coolers (only these available lol)

  • CoolerMaster Nepton 140XL - Liquid Cooler
  • Scythe Tatsumi SCTTM-1000I - Air Cooler
  • Antec Kuhler H2O 950 - Liquid Cooler
  • Antec Kuhler H2O H600 - Liquid Cooler
  • Noctua NH-C14 - Air Cooler
  • Noctua NH-D14 - Air Cooler
  • Corsair Hydro H60 - Air Cooler
  • Noctua NH-U9B SE2 - Air Cooler

Which one of these will give me the best performance?

thanks!

It is most likely not the cooler that caused the crash (You need to monitor temperatures during these tests). You may have gotten unlucky.

It is called the silicon lottery for a reason. Some CPUs can overclock better, some are terrible.

I recommend running a stress test again and watching temperatures.

I have a 6600K and a Hyper 212 Evo, and i got OC of 4.4 Ghz stable at about 48C

You have no need for a AIO Water on a i5

Welcome to the forums!

Now before you start thinking your cooler is bottlenecking your OC, please tell us what kind of temps you are seeing and what your OC settings are. As the others stated, chances are good that the cooler isn't what is limiting you in this instance.

When in doubt, re-format.

Thank you.

I've ran a stress test for 25 minutes and here's what I got.

For some reason, my 6600K doesn't go above 3.57GHz during a stress test. Always does that.

While running games like Battlefield 1, GTA V, and others.. my CPU jumps over 70 degrees, hits 75 - 80 degrees during intense moments.

That is not a stress test. Download a program like Prime95, it will spike your CPU usage up to 100%, monitor temperatures and frequency.

I've run Prime95 on Small FFTs and of course got the package on 100 degrees, CPU speed was actually @3.40 - 3.50GHz.

After running Prime95 on Blend, my CPU kept jumping between 3.57GHz and 3.54GHz. Just these two numbers.

Temperatures running on Blend were between 70 - 75 degrees.

VCore = around 1.185V average.

During the Blend stress test my average power usage was between 55 - 60W

I am in no way an expert in overclocking (far from it TBH), but I would recommend adjusting your voltage and multipliers a bit before you take the plunge and buy another cooler.

I still didn't get an answer though.. Which cooler is the best? lol

The NH-D14 is the best of the list. That being said, your temps aren't even that high and isn't the cause for your oc not working. Your cpu is fine up to 80-90c at load.

What motherboard do you have and what settings are you using?

How are you possibly hoping to oc with factory settings?

I recently returned all settings back to how they were.

I had my VCore set to 1.20V and CPU ratio set to 43

1.2v isn't that high. Either raise your voltage or lower your multiplier.

Did you test for stability at 4.2ghz?

Single channel 8GB DDR4 2133MHz

I'm getting another stick next week.

Some basic stuff or one with beefy heatspreader? Reason why I'm asking is to make sure D14 fits. It hangs over 2 first RAM slots with fan installed on RAM side. You can move fan up, but if your case has tight limit of 160mm, that might not be possible.

OK, you are good with that one. And I can only assume your case will fit it.

thank you :)

I also have a Sharkoon VG5-W ATX PC case.

and a Gigabyte Z170-HD3P motherboard.. eye balling it telling me it wont fit :(

The mobo will be fine. Most bigger air coolers block 1st PCIex1 slot anyway, so no worries there. And you GPU has backplate so no issue on there either. Max CPU cooler height for case is 160mm. We can only hope its optimistic enough to give you 1mm to work with. My current case has marked clearance for 167mm coolers. Meaning that my 165mm cooler is literally mm's away from sidepanel.
