Need an headset

Over

Hi.

I already have an headphone (Audio-Technica ATH-M50), which I like very much. I've been using it intensively for everything (music, gaming, etc) since my daughter was born and I couldn't make noise at night (and the speakers stopped working, so I didn't bother buying new ones).

4 years of intensive use and it still sounds amazing, but the fake leather started to peel off. I'm not getting rid of them, as they will be my first preference to hear music, but I need something else for gaming and an headset would be ideal.

I would like to know your recommendations, taking into account the following:

- Budget: 120€ (some room for more, if it really justifies it)

- I'm big headed (around 62-63cm round, shaved head). For reference, the Razer Kraken Pro and the Steelseries Siberia V2 don't quite fit comfortably (tried today, in a store). The Razer Man 'o war feel great, but they're 200€ here.

- I prefer the ones which sorround my ears without touching them. I know my ATH-M50 is closed back, I never tried with open backs, but I'm open for suggestions of either ones.

- I'm not expecting the same sound quality as the ATX-M50, but I prefer audio quality over style, clarity over power (but not too washed out sounds, please!)

- I don't have a DAC nor plan to buy one. So it should play when I plug it to my motherboard's I/O or USB and not need an amplifier or an extra enenrgy source.

- As I said, the headset is for gaming, so the mic quality isn't too important, as long as people can hear and understand me well. I won't be recording my voice for video production or anything like that.

What would you recommend me?

Edit: for reference, Rainbow 6 Siege is the game I play the most, so hearing small noises (like footsteps) and knowing where they come from, is important.

Why not add a microphone to your ATH-M50s?

  • Modmic
  • Zalman ZMMIC1
  • Some form of desk mic
  • V-moda boompro mic? (needs to have a 3.5mm connector on the headphone side)
  • beyerdynamic gear mic (although the reviews aren't great)
  • ect.

If not then

Any of the hyperX headsets are pretty good,

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

I saw te box in the store and they looked nice. They fit my head, but they weren't connected to any sound source, so I could test the sound. And they had the Cloud (first), the Cloud Revolver and the Cloud Core, so I wondered what's the difference. But by your suggestion, I'll assume the Cloud 2 is the best one for my requirements, from HyperX, right?

Second HyperX recommendation, although you didn't specify the Cloud 2 (why?).

I have a mic that I can attach to my shirt, but the extra cable from the back of my PC and the fact that I'm constantly loosing it is just bothersome to me (well, I just have to follow the cable to find it, but still...). The proof is that I have it since 3 years ago and never used it again... I would prefer an all-in-one solution.

The V-moda boompro mic? The beyerdynamic mic? It's literally just a cable for your headphones but has a boom mic attached to it turning a pair of headphones to a headset :P

I'd recommend doing this, so there's no compromising on either side. I have the vmoda boompro mic and it works perfectly.

With your worry about an "all in one" solution, the Mic is physically plugged into the headphone's 3.5mm port.

yes, it is indeed. the hyperX line also has a lot of reputation so i wont be bothered not to recommend them. plus the hyperX cloud 2 are 7.1 surround (i believe)
