However Linus said it is upto manufactures to implement unofficial support

It's extremely unlikely that their motherboard partners will ever implement support for Xeons... I suspect Intel doesn't want people 'exploiting' (or as I like to put it - buying smart) the cheaper Xeons and using them with consumer mobos like they did with Haswell.

I wouldn't get my hopes up.

To be honest in the UK I can get a xeon for the price of a i5- similarly clocked, personally a great deal, I don't overclock as I have a non k haswell cpu at the moment, nor do I intend to buy a overclockable chip.

If you're currently on Haswell, you could go for the Xeon 1231 v3. It's a i7 4770 without the iGPU.

Im looking at changing architectures, might sell current system to my brother...

Don't need a igpu as a discrete gpu. Thankfully

Intel are just being annoying as its affecting their profits, like it will, amd hasn't released a brand new architecture in 5 years making intel the go to. Allowing them to increase prices because people need new desktop cpus

I think most people can agree to the fact that Intel essentially has a pseudo-monopoly at this point of time. One of the reasons why so many people are excited/hyped about AMD's Zen as it will signify their return to the CPU market as a worthy competitor, provided all things go well.

If they can manage to ship a competitive product that will make a good investment for the money, sure. And we may get better deals on Intel CPUs, although this is pure speculation: we'll have to see independent benchmarks when the new lineup is released. Anyway, if you're rock-solid on changing architecture, go for a Xeon E3-1230 v5. Otherwise, get the E3-1231 v3 and stick to your current motherboard, as you likely won't be seeing a huge performance increase going from Haswell to Skylake.
