Hello, hope everyone is well. My uncle called me today saying that his computer made this weird noise. After the noise, it was still running fine, but he smelled smoke and shut the computer down. I took the computer home, cleaned it and didnt find any fire damage or similar things. I tried powering it on but it did not work. No fans were running and they system wasn't booting. I suspected it was the psu, so i bought one off amazon and it got delivered today I plugged it into the mobo and still nothing. The motherboard light is turning on, which i think indicates that its getting power but im not too sure. So im asking you guys, what could be wrong with the computer! thanks

Do the case fans run fine and everything if you unplug the cpu and motherboard power and jump the 24 pin?

Size or height aren't the problem, the bulging tops are, along with completely blown ones or smokey oily residue coming out of the tops of one.

You said he heard a pop and smelt smoke so it definitely could be one decided to pop. You can also do yourself a favor and try to make it easier on yourself and remove all the extra stuff from the motherboard as possible like extra PCI-E  cards, case USB headers, use a single stick of ram, make sure the cpu fan is hooked up to the cpu fan header.

Test the PSU and case fans by unhooking the 8 pin cpu and 24 pin power and jumping the 24 pin,  and turning it on, if they case fans are working now then you definitely have some sort of short on the motherboard preventing it from booting.

Yeah a 4 pin CPU power connector is unplugged in one of the photos. Is that intentional?

Edit: Oh ok, just checking.

Quick question: If the mobo light is on, could the mobo still be dead, as in it wont give power to anything?

It could be on but won't boot because of a short or some other problem due to a fault prevention/protection feature. That is why you are going to test the case fans and PSU by jumping the PSU. If case fans run fine then you gotta find what the short is or the motherboard (or rarely cpu) just crapped the bed.

Kk thanks!

It can be as simple as a case USB being bad causing a short from plugging up your phone charger or USB stick one too many times, that can cause a short which would keep a PC from booting, or it could be as bad as the motherboard dying because a capacitor blew or something.
