I fitted my new 1070 this morning, it's an MSI GTX1070 Gaming X card.

My first thought was it was DOA as it was causing my entire system to instantly freeze when I pressed the power button, I couldn't even hard power down (by holding the power button for 4 seconds) and had to switch of at the PSU.

Solved that one by resetting CMOS but then I was getting this weird power cycling on my monitor during POST, the monitor would flick from input to no input repeatedly until Windows was running, once Windows is running the card works absolutely perfectly.

I don't know what fixed this but after a few hours this issue resolved itself so I thought I was golden but now I've realised that I cannot enter UEFI at all, as soon as I try (in any way) the monitor says no input and powers down and I have to reset to get back up and running. The same thing also happens if I try to boot from GRUB or CLOVER (for Ubuntu & OS X), as soon as I select the boot device the screen says no input and powers down.

Anybody got any ideas? Do I need to RMA this card?

are you using displayport? my guess is it's an oddity about DP, it's probably worth giving your retailer of choice a call about this :/

I've got no choice, my monitor is G Sync.

I have just worked out that if I dont enable UEFI boot mode in UEFI and leave it on legacy boot everything works perfectly but as soon as I enable UEFI mode the problems start.

Have spoken to the retailer and they've advised me to speak to MSI on monday as they don't have a clue what is going on, he's opened a support note for me and said if MSI cant resolve it then he will do an RMA.

seems like they got you covered, a piece of (normally unnecessary) advice is to keep as friendly as possible to the retailer.

i have a similar issue with my dell ultrasharp, there's so many layers to the issue i'm having that i honestly just found a bodge to make it run reliable 99% of the time, and deal with that one percent :P

although it seems like your problem is slightly less convoluted, so i'm hoping you have more luck :D

Well I've got an update on this....

I spent most of yesterday trawling through various posts on Toms Hardware and Nvidia's forums and the first thing to warn people about, THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY COMMON ISSUE!!! There is a topic on this issue at Nvidia's forums with over 150,000 replies to it and a second one on the same issue in a different board with over 100,000 replies. Toms Hardware is also flooded with people complaining of no signal at various points with GTX1070s.

Some users are getting the error like mine where it power cycles during post then is fine in Windows, others have the reverse where it posts perfectly then starts power cycling when Windows runs and some have had the card work for a week only to start doing it. Its always caused by using DP (HDMI & DVI are not affected) and there seems to be no consistent fix. Some say swapping DP cables fixed it then others respond saying they are using $60 gold plated cables and still have the issue, some are saying that disabling power saving settings on the monitor has solved it while others say it does nothing, some say unplugging the monitor power for an hour solved it then others say t does nothing and one guy even claims he solved it by unplugging his SATA cables from the mainboard.

The consensus (from the users who seem to understand hardware pretty well) is there is something wrong with the cards DP port circuit causing the DP port to draw to much power and stop working (I really have zero idea if this is even remotely possible?) but whatever it is it must be a fault with Nvidia's design as it affects pretty much every manufacturer (I've seen MSI, EVGA, Gigabyte & Palit) and seems to have no preference on system type either (I've seen systems ranging from P65 all the way up to X99 affected).

I have tried pretty much all the fixes I have found (with the exception of disabling monitor power as my monitor doesn't have that option) and nothing worked for me.

Then I decided to try something else. When I first got the card it didn't work at all so I tried it in slot 2 and it fired up straight away which got me thinking so I swapped the card over to slot 2 on my board (which is an X8 slot) and since 4pm yesterday afternoon (its now midday) the card has been working perfectly. I have rebooted and entered UEFI about 15 times and its worked every single time, I no longer get the the power cycling monitor during post and boot up and performance has actually increased (my 3D Mark Firestrike score jumped 1500pts by moving it to slot 2) plus when I moved the card and booted up into Windows it found a new Audio Device which it didn't find in slot 1.

Assuming it continues working as it is now then I am happy to keep it but if it puts a single foot wrong in the next week or so then I am returning it

are you still in contact with the retailer? i'm sure they'll be all over the "x8 slot is faster than x16 slot" thing, which could actually point to a weird issue with your card beyond the x8 pins.

if the retailer agrees, i'd suggest swapping it out either way, even if only for science to see if it's a rare case or a reproducable problem with a different card. (which if it is, it's in the best interest of your retailer to know this as well.)

I'll call them up tomorrow and speak to them again, see what they say about it. TBH the guy I spoke to yesterday seemed to be pretty genuine and willing to RMA the card for further testing.

I've compared my x8 result with other users running the card in x16 and its pretty much smack bang in the middle of the range so I am confident that running the card in the x8 slot is not affecting performance in any way.

i'm sure x8 doesnt impact the card, it's just that x16 should impact it even less, but the fact it does isnt really giving much confidence o.O

I think I will invest in one of the those electric dusters from amazon and give the x16 slot a blow out, see if there's a piece of dust in the slot.
