Windows Update

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

Got it solved. So.... Yeah. It took.... a very.... very...... long time.

I'm not sure how good your relations are with Microsoft @GoodBytes but maybe you could tell them to update the ISO files for the Windows installations. I got the latest one and I'm surprised they didn't/don't the latest updates. Extremely frustrating.

I appreciate your help on this.

So I bought a new WiFi card a while ago and I haven't had it for more than a week and I'm having some issues. I talked with Asus and they said none of it is on their end.

These tests were done with fresh installs of Windows just to be sure. Fesh/clean installs like a new built PC, just to make sure the WiFi card works out of the box and on its own. Installation order - Windows 8.1 > motherboard drivers > WiFi card driver

UEFI installation of Windows - It manages to connect to networks just fine, for example it works for using the internet fine. However, when I go to check for Windows updates it just sits there. I'll leave it on checking updates for hours and it just sits there doing nothing. I've restarted the PC multiple times just to see if that does anything (sometimes you need to do this for drivers and what not), shutting down the PC and turning it back and nothing happens. It just sits there.

Non UEFI installation of Windows - Non UEFI installation of Windows is a bit of a different story though. It works on its own completely with no major issues. However, it does sit there for hours just searching for updates. And even when it's searching for updates, it's not displaying the correct information because when I go to restart the PC it will install some updates. So, it's giving the message that it's searching for updates. but what it's really doing is downloading updates. (extremely frustrating when it's taking hours and you don't know if it's working or not)

So from this, I think it might be something to do with the motherboard, but I don't know what it would be for sure. I'm thinking maybe the boot settings but I don't see how that would effect it. I can look at the settings if necessary.

@GoodBytes Your help on this would be deeply appreciated

Your wireless card works fine. The problem is Windows 7. The updated is broken. It is fixed it the later updates, but you need to get it.

The reason why you have the wrong info, is because you have two process, one for Windows Update that you opened, and the other it is the background auto updater. They are not communicating properly between each other. Again, a bug in Win7.

You just have to wait.

Also, for the UEFI install, the card's activity light doesn't even blink. So I know it's not doing anything.

As long as it works, it is what matters. You can try the drivers directly from the wireless chip manufacture (ASUS doesn't actually make the wireless chip. They generally use MediaTek chip, if I am not mistaken)

Hours. Disable your computer from going to sleep, and leave it at night and see.

Hours.

It's a PCE-AC68 WiFi card, from looking at the specifications it appears to be a broadcom chipset. So, should I check broadcom's site?

Oh.. hmm... I am not sure Broadcom has drivers that you can get.

Can you use Windows own drivers? (uninstall the ones you have, and let Windows install the drivers. Open Device Manager, pick your wireless card (after you uninstalled the drivers, and restarted the system, assuming that Windows install any drivers yet, right-click on the wireless card, pick "Update drivers" then on Windows Update (or Automatic... sorry I forgot the layout on Windows 8, MS changed in the latest Fast Ring build of Windows 10, which I run).

Windows did not set/use default drivers for the WiFi card during the fresh installs. I had to install the drivers provided by Asus.

It is possible that Microsoft is making Windows Update frustrating to deal with in Windows 7 purposely, to try to coerce people to use Windows 10.

Actually, I think that information should be assembled into a sticky post for the top of the forum. Issues with Windows Update are asked weekly, sometimes multiple times a week.

I'm surprised Microsoft won't fix their shit on this. This is so fucking frustrating. I was about to RMA the shit out of my motherboard and WiFi card because of this shit. They can easily fix it on their end as well.

Fuckin............ Soooooo annoying.

It's been a very long-standing issue, and it would likely be a very simple and easy fix on Microsoft's end. But, I think that Microsoft wants to make it as inconvenient for people to use Windows 7 as they can, to try to coerce people into using Windows 10.

No. It was happening way before Windows 10 was even an Insider. The problem with Windows update was getting progressively worse as more and more updated were released. I think there is a algorithm bug in the Windows Update system.

How did you solve the problem?

I don't have a relation with Microsoft. So there is nothing I can do,let alone suggest beside the Feedback app of Windows 10, like everyone else.

Could you contact people at Microsoft and ask them to fix it please? You seem to have good ends with Microsoft.
