RAID 0 - Increased speed, no redundancy.

RAID 1 - No speed increase, 1 disk redundancy.

 

Your BIOS/RAID controller will tell you what RAID you are using.

If you have one disk, you aren't using RAID.

Raid 1 is bascially cloning one drive to another at the bit level.  So both drives have exactly the same inforamtion on them.  as opposed to Raid 0 where the data is striped across both drives

Very simply, raid 1 means the same data is on both drives, so if one fails all the data is safe as it also on the second drive
