I'm been wanting a nas for a while along with a little server to run some game servers minecraft 7days project zomboid ect. I got my primary computer doing the server stuff now but it's on  water so I dont like running it 24/7.

So I need like a small server/Nas to kill two birds with one stone is there a way to combind there functionality into one? What os. Should I run? What kind of hardware should I have? Size and power don't matter to me I just need it to be able to run Backups and be on 24/7.

Yes, you can have a server that will function as a NAS in the form of a file server that you back up files to.

as for what OS, Windows Server is great, but expensive. Linux has good options.

As for hardware, I'd go for an inexpensive Xeon, some cheap RAM, a good power supply, a small SSD and a few WD Reds.

Different PCPartPickers for different countries:

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

Thanks for the fast reply so how expensive is windows server ?

Witch one 2008 or 2012?

Does it have the functionalities built in?

Set up the ssd as an os drive?

And will after set up be able to run headless?

And is there remote access possibilities like if I needed a friend to get into it to start something ?

Id go linux with kvm for the host, then install windows 7 vm's if you need windows for a app.

If you want windows server, its about 500 bucks and id get 2012r2 or 2016

Yep, both linux and windows server have all the nas and vm stuff buit in

SSD for boot, sure, but will make no difference for your use.

You can run headless

You can use remote desktop on windows, or ssh on linux, port fordware them if you want someone on want to control it.

There are a few things you could do such as virtualizion and creating vms for the nas, and the server, hypervisors like exsi, unraid, or xenserver are good.

For the nas you may want ecc, and it won't need much cpu power, but minecraft servers may use a bit of cpu power, and both will use a lot of ram, I would say 32gb minimum just to be safe.

I got an old gen 1 i7 950 with a mobo that can do ddr2 triple channel? Or should I look into xenon for the ecc memory ?

Won't vm,s split the available resources I was hoping to have like a one instance open that can do both is that possible?

ECC isnt worth it, use your old i7. ALso that i7 is ddr3 only

Id use a vm so one game server/app can't hurt the rest of the system.

Cause it for small servers for my friends mostly under 10 people across all servers at any givin time and with the remote access part that can be done over the Internet and not just localyou?

Sorry for all the questions.

Just portforward the ssh or remote desktop port.

So what would be good vm software  is there like a free os that I could use or should I buy like another win 7 key? And use free nas or something?

You can use what ever hypervisor you want. I personally use centos with kvm due to how flexable it is(easy to configue software raid compared to something like xenserver or esxi).

Don't use freenas in a vm, no reason to, you can also run zfs on linux. If you have a windows 7 vm, you need a new key.

I would run UnRaid.

It runs VMs great, and makes a great NAS. I am going to run all my servers (Not game servers) off of it.

You get a 30 day trial, after that it is $30, $60 or $120, depending on what level you choose.

It boots from any old USB drive, and an SD can be used as cache, but it destroys the SSD after a few years.

But centos is free and much more customizable.

But for a new user, who probably isn't too familiar with the Linux command line, will find UnRaid much easier, and it will probably do everything needed without requiring much customization.

But the operating system is just personal preference.
