I am planning a new gaming/programming build, my budget is about $1,200, but that is not a hard limit. I'd like the price to be as low as possible.

I already have a few parts, please edit this list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/chJ6RG

I do not need any peripherals or OS, I already have a 1440p monitor.

I would like an i7, an M.2 SSD and black/white components.

I already have a HDD, as well as Arctic Siver 5 and plenty of case fans.

Let's see what you guys come up with.

I'm more than ok with a B+M drive, doesn't have to be super speed.

I hust want an M.2 over a 2.5" because I'm willing to spend an extra $10 to not have to deal with cables.

But, if you're planning on sticking with a 1440p monitor, a GTX-1070 is all you need.

That was my thought as well.

And it is worth mentioning that I do care about appearance, and would rather get a 6 core i7 and a nice looking mobo with a 1070 than trying to squeeze a 1080 into the list.

I know that a 6 core processor sounds nice, but I doubt that you need it.

A basic i7-6700(K) plus a good looking socket 1151 motherboard (B150, H170, Z170) is fine.

You only need an I5 for gaming, but the i7 may make programming go faster (shorter compile times).

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

If you're using a 144hz monitor and play a bunch of AAA games you're going to need all the horsepower you can get in order to be playing near that 144hz threshold...

If you want to save a few bucks you could always go 1070 instead. you COULD also get a cheaper SSD, but this is an NVMe drive so its going to be significantly faster than a high performance SSD, about the same price, and almost half the price of a 950 PRO.

It's roughly an extra $100 from the 6700k + Mobo to the 5820k + mobo. Is it worth it?

It's also ~$100 to go from an i5-6600K to an i7-6700K. The only real difference would be render times. It's up to you if saving a few minutes here and there is worth the extra cost. :)

I have looked into this quite a lot, when I take into account the server hosting and photoshopping I do, as well as the fact that PlanetSide 2 seems to be able to use 6 threads, the i7 is worth it.

No one said that it wasn't 144hz. resolution and refresh rate are the 2 most important things when determining how powerful your gaming system needs to be. people who go 1440p often also go 144hz.

If you're not pushing 100+ hz, then a 1070 will be all of the horsepower you need for most games. use the same build I posted but sub out any 1070 you want. I think aesthetically the EVGA 1070 FTW card should look great and perform a bit better out of the box than something like a Strix or G1 Gaming (although if you OC them it should be about the same). feel free to pick whichever one you like though.
