i wouldn't recommend doing that if you are going to add another ram stick they must be the same capacity, speed, and of course the same version (ddr3/4 etc.)

You can use different speed, latency and capacity RAM. It will operate at the slowest setting and stack the RAM accordingly, like 4gb + 8Gb = 12 Gb but usually need to be in different channels.

It isn't an opinion, I have an ASUS G750 laptop with 4 SODIMM slots. It was 2 8Gb modules and a 4Gb module. Once the board is high end enough to have a decent chipset and board makers didn't cheap out on the RAM routing it will work
