Hi so I managed to get this router

https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-D3600-100UKS-802-11n-Gigabit-Router/dp/B00UT5K1UA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476264212&sr=8-1&keywords=Netgear+d3600

for about £20 new and I noticed on the box it says adsl for and I have heard of vdsl and I'm not sure if and how well it will work to replace my but home hub 4

https://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-home-hub-4--bt-broadband-customers--068340-8P1M.html

i got this with my isp and I know a bit about networking so any help would be great.

My speeds are about 36 down and 5 up

if I am not able to use it as a router could It be used for a wifi extender and or a switch because as I noticed it has gigabit Ethernet.

Thanks

I don't see any reasons why it wouldn't work, aside from your ISP being a c*nt and blocking 3rd party modems. If you're lucky, all you need to do is plug the ADSL line into the WAN port on the modem/router and DHCP will do the rest. If your ISP grants an IP to your WAN interface, you're up and running pretty much. The LAN ports and WLAN will be used to connect to your clients to distribute the internet connection.

There's no harm in trying. If you don't get an IP address from your ISP on the WAN port, then they are most likely not allowing you to use third party routers, usually by applying MAC filtering. You can always put your BT unit back.

If you use IPTV, you might have some trouble setting that up. If not, good for you.

Okay thanks. I did read somewhere that adsl isn't good enough for modern connections as it only can do 8mbps correct me if I'm wrong.

ADSL2+ is capable of speeds up to 24/3.3 if it were to follow the standard to the letter.

Okay so with this router then that would be my max speed even though my line is faster

Honestly, since you already have it, just give it a shot. It takes 5 minutes to find out whether it's an improvement or not. Just try and report back.

I can't at the moment because I'm at work but as soon as I can I will and if I were to get it running would I simply have to speed test my connection to find out if the router will go above 24 Mbps or something else

yeah, just run a couple of speed tests at a website like speedtest.net. Keep in mind to run it from a direct cable connection to verify what your max connection speed is.

if the router is adsl than no it will not work, vdsl is an entirely different protocol altogether. You should first see the spec sheet on netgear's website to check if it supports vdsl.

Knowing BT adsl will work on a vdsl line but you will be restricted to adsl speeds. What i did was get a seperate router and modem.

So that when you upgrade you dont have to buy a whole new device. It also helps with troubleshooting. All in one routers tend to lack features that are really helpful to a router.

If you're on vdsl netgear has the dm200 modem (should be called dm100) that is quite cheap if you buy new. Other than that there are 2nd hand modems you can get that were given out by BT before.
