How does this work? 240 Hz?

It isn't 240hz

 

Its 60hz with backlight strobing.

So im looking to buy a new monitor and ive come across the PlayStation 3D display but im a bit confused. The advertised refresh rate is 240 Hz but it only has HDMI and component and I thought HDMI can only carry 60Hz. So how does this work?

They turn the backlight on and off rapidly to make it seem like the motion is crisper reducing motion blur. They also fake frames with the onboard chips makeing in between frames.

It's literally turning on and off the backlight very quickly. (backlight turns off when a frame is not being displayed) It can help reduce the perceived motion blur.

So does that mean that a display with backlight strobing 60hz is better then a normal 60hz monitor?
