I'm trying to build a computer for under $1700 for mostly VR, family wants to get it setup in the living room. Looking to get the best performance out of $1700, please include OS in the price, don't need keyboard, mouse or monitor.

This is what i'm looking at so far. Please help me out!

.

I would actually cut down the SSD to a 256gb one, a 4TB HDD and an I7 instead.

For a $1700 build, I would be looking at a i7 6700K. You could save some money by getting a cheaper air cooler (the Phanteks PH-TC14PE) that will perform the same whilst operating quieter.

What would be the reason for switching the I5-6600k for an 17-6700k? Is it really that much better or just slightly better?

Whilst the i5 6600K holds a better price to performance ratio, there are notable improvements with an i7 6700K, especially in CPU intensive situations. VR requires the system to push out higher framerates, so you're more likely going to be more CPU-bound.

Besides, pairing a i5 with a GTX 1080 is a bit of an injustice.

That's true I forgot to even think about the chance of a bottleneck there, thank you i'll update it.

Recommend i7

What about getting an I7 with a 1070? I think that would cut down price a bit more but also reduce bottleneck significantly.

I dont think the I5 will bottleneck with the 1080 but its just better to go with the i7 if you're going to spend that much... The i7 with the 1070 also sounds fine

IMO you should get both the i7 and 1080 and cutdown on the SSD

I recommend not getting a HDD that is a multiple of 1.5TB. They have higher failure rates for some reason.

The i7 plus 1080 is very much so worth it.

Cut down on HDD and SSD realistically didn't need that much storage in first place. Do I need that much RAM for this build? 32GB seems like a lot?

toned back on case, and the whole overclocking route. Get an i7 for the basically same price as i5 K with radiator.
